#42 - Jayden Nguyen

I dunno if this has been mentioned but on the actual efc website there is a good 4 min highlights video of Nguyen and some of the other guys that i hadn’t seen yet, i’d only seen the club upload 1 min clips elsewhere.

This gives you a good idea that he’s a fast twitch fibre athlete, very busy and good at breaking tackles and getting the ball out. Needs to improve his kicking a little bit, but has good distance on his kicks so something that could be made better. At least mmoe easily than players that lack penetration on their kicks.

He wont die wondering he plays with a desperate we haven’t really seen

I think we’re going to see competition for a few spots (flanks and pockets at either end) like we haven’t seen for a while.

Guys like Perkins, Gresham, Roberts, Redman, Davey and even McGrath will be kept real honest.

By my reckoning we’ve added 7 guys (plus seh) who play with more pace, grunt and polish than a number of guys running around on the outside for us last year.

Obviously all will need time to develop but I think there’s a number of guys who could bob up for a senior game and not to be totally out of place.

Theres also an apetite for taller bigger mids, johnson and day-wicks will apply the same pressure.

Yeah I could see Johnson sliding in on a wing very comfortably if called on.

DW I still see more off a stringer role but he could fly past Perkins with the extra explosiveness he seems to have.

Another excellent addition to our list.

we’ve always lacked a competitive mark in midfield, its another reason why nic martin going to hbf was so bizarre.

Duz is good in the air too. Duursma is at least brave in the air

I suspect the whole Jones/Cox wing thing was about trying to compensate for the lack of aerial threat in the middle.

If we pull that bullshit again next year after this draft there should be serious pressure on Scott’s job.

It’s obviously a little early to tell but the wing pecking order could be something like this:

  • Martin
  • duursma
  • Seh
  • Roberts
  • prior
  • Johnson
  • clarke
  • Cox
  • Davey

I can see him getting a shot in the defensive small forward role. His speed could be exciting to watch

Yeah, I real flexibility there. He’s got hops and courage so he could work as a small defender too with the right match up.

Plenty of sides playing numerous small forwards now

Every good team has players that are more than competent contested marks. it allows the game to be opened up so much

Our coaches will correct that.

Could be our Caleb Daniel, possibly more strings to his bow. In and under, good hands, speed, run and carry, Parish like competitiveness, good field kicking and no trouble dobbing one from 50. Just stop putting annoying music to highlight packages.

When you are short, you can’t be just good, you need to have elite traits and deliver on a consistent basis. It’s a wait and watch on Jayden for now.

Speaking of which, based purely on the results of this draft did we do a reset or are we still going to do a rebuild?

I hate Vietnamese food, but I will smash anyone that racially vilifies him.

I think he will be battling Cox for that role.

For me quite a different player. Daniel when in form is a great decision maker and has the skill to execute. Not really a shut down player or overly defensive minded

Nguyen is a strong defensive minded back that needs to learn decision making and execution better. Can break the lines at ease with his blistering pace also

Im happy he got his chance.

will be interesting if he is tried in defence or forward at VFL level.
VFL forwardline might be stacked with Unwin, Menzie, Davey and Day-wicks there.

I will be comparing him to Matt Foleys exploits at VFL level this year. But yeh hoping to see more of a close checking player who uses his speed rather than an accumulator like Foley.

Luamon Lual will be super interesting too, got himself fit this preseason. expect a big VFL season at half back.
