#45 Anthony “Munny” Munkara

You’re new here aren’t you?

I’d have kept him on the list just to fleece extra dollars out of Blitz.

Warragul finished the 2023 season in sixth place on the West Gippsland Football Netball League ladder, ending with a 10-8 record before eventually bowing out to Phillip Island by way of a two-point prelimary final loss.

Did he leave us to play for a club with finals success?

Just to be sensible for a moment, it’s not even a matter of competence.

Most of us watch on TV, and even if we watch live we watch the ball as that is where the action is happening. So we have some idea of a player’s impact at the contest. But 99% of the time players are somewhere else and what they are doing at that time matters enormously. Most of us miss that most of the time.

On top of this, we don’t even know what a game plan is, let alone what each player’s role is within that plan. None of us have played AFL at an elite level or any sport for that matter at such a high level, so we don’t understand the physical and mental preparation required, and we have limited information regarding injuries the players are carrying.

Consequently our evaluations of performance are very superficial, whereas the coaches look at the things that matter, have played at this level and have much more information on each player’s unique situation.

I’m just stating the obvious that most of the time we post rubbish.
This is why most (all?) of us lap up the_Don1’s contributions because he is a professional in his role and his views are informed by an enormous amount of data.

yeh I knew that was wrong but I didn’t want to show off
…we could get hung up on what elite is.

all that stuff you mention, esp the bolded part can also be their downfall because they are to close to the situation.

one small example is all of our coaches thought it was a smart idea to bring back jake stringer for a last last last ditch effort to make finals, only to get belted anyway and ship him off for surgery the following week.

I can pick prolly 50 posters on here who post regularly who could have told you before the event that was a dumb idea, lacking as much inside info as you say the coaches, yet again with all that added extra info they still made that god aweful decision, amongst many more.

Ironically the thread this post is in in relation to munny, there were a few people yet again who questioned his ability to adapt to the afl lifestyle before he was picked, yet enough people at this club said, with again all the added info you claim they have (which obviously they do) yep lets pick him up and see what happens.
to which they can him a year later cos he’s so friggin far off the pace (which again people without the extra info could see prior to him being selected).

Having more information doesn’t ALWAYS equate to making better decisions, esp in sports, esp at this football club. we have the last 12 plus years as prime example of that.

From afar it looks to have been an unfortunate turn around in momentum with the Indigenous program in general at Essendon. Was a big push to members on the changing landscape with Rioli on the board and Ryder to oversee support. Looks like Ryder has left the club and Rioli has resigned as Director. Walla has left and Munkara was touted as a patient project player to myself but then cut after 1 year. Club obviously have the right to delist Munkara with whatever information they have inside the Hangar but they must be frustrated with how the first 12 months has gone re overall program after such genuine positivity.

Has Rioli resigned? When was this? I missed this announcement.

It’s not good.

Announced at AGM. Left for personal reasons

Think it was family reasons wasn’t it? Or was it just “personal” reasons?

It shows how far off being an afl footballer he was and why the club was vindicated in delisting him, when he winds up signing to play in the West Gippsland football league

Do we know why this has happened?
Strange that such a positive move has appeared to have gone so wrong so quickly.
Do we have anyone left at the club in an off field indigenous role?

Holy ■■■■, not Warragul but the Dusties? Unbelievable.

I’m not shocked, we’ve been gaslit on the club by this stuff for a while now.

When it all got announced i even said to my mates, let’s see where it it all is a year from now…

Well then.

Indigenous focus or lack there of aside, why would we not have a category B rookie? they are the definition of a free hit from a cap perspective. Even if we churned the through someone every year or 2 until we hit. Seems extremely short sighted and a symptom of a club still stuck in a vacuum if you ask me.

What happened to those Irish lads we were looking at?

If Rioli left the board for “personal reasons”, is it the clubs fault?

What did Paddy Ryder even do while at Essendon? A baffling appointment to begin with, and frankly I’m glad to have seen the back of him. Who knows whether he was any good at his role

Walla leaving was unfortunate and it would’ve been great for him to stay on in a mentor role but maybe he didn’t think that role was for him? Again, not a club issue

Munkara, just wasn’t an afl footballer.

Can’t blame the club, YET, for any of those
