#45 Anthony “Munny” Munkara

it brings up an interesting connundrum. not all are going to fit into the forwardline, esp at afl level. i think it was postured on here maybe wanganeen and one of the days is trialled on teh hbf.

cos as much as we want it to happen, the afl sides forwardline isn’t ever going to be (barring injuries) tippa, davey x 2, munkara and wanga.
spread them out across the field however(and don’t just say move them into the midfield, they are along way back in that area also) and you never know.

I haven’t read the whole thread.

If he is so good, why no interest in the draft?

Alwyn’s always been talked up as more of a mid/wing than a forward, so I don’t think it’s reasonable to just outright rule out a midfield role on his part. And I don’t expect Munkara or Jayden to be ready for senior footy til 2024, and by then Walla will be 30. I don’t think they’re causing any massive selection logjam in the short term at least.

It’d be nice to stack them all in the same Dreamtime side at some point though.

Gee that Tiwi Academy is paying Dividends.

Very limited form this year due to family issues etc. Plus other clubs are aware of how much effort and development we put into him, and how close he is to EFC and how much he wanted to be here. Taking him away from that support system that the club has built over the last few years for him would be a risk.

It may take some time, like a couple of pre seasons to get his endurance up to standard, if people are suggesting he has a low base. I wouldn’t know. But I could see him definitely being used with this new sub ruled about to be introduced, same as Davey. But his highlights package are off the charts. So exciting, can’t wait. Welcome Anthony.

I think this is often a misconception about the draft, That clubs just pick the best talent and what’s left is players who have little talent.

There is outside of football factors, that mean clubs aren’t willing to take risks on some players.

If a club picked Munkara in the draft, it means that they are removing him from the support systems that Essendon has put in place to support him in transitioning to Melbourne. Like living with Tippa. Being mentored by Dean Rioli. And the relationships he has already built at the club.

Most draft experts had Munkara rated late first round/early second round. The talent is there.

If you had to pigeon hole him and say he plays like, who would you put it down too.

While not seen as a likely first-round draft selection, Essendon Next Generation Academy prospect Anthony Munkara could be the most talented and tantalising player in his draft class.

The West Adelaide midfield-forward entered this year as an intriguing talent for AFL scouts, however none have had their sights on the teenager more than the Bombers.

Early into the year Munkara was firming as a potential top 10 selection, having dazzled for the AFL Academy in a hitout against Collingwood’s VFL side, with Munkara one of the top performers in the match.

He had also impressed in his pair of outings for West Adelaide’s Under-18s side in the SANFL, booting six goals and collecting 22 disposals across the two matches to further stamp himself as a top prospect in 2022.

Subsequent showings for the Allies weren’t as prolific, but the powerful and pacey teenager was still showing signs of what is in store.

Munkara flew back to the Tiwi Islands following a series of family tragedies and saw his 2022 campaign heavily interrupted, leaving him with little chance for great exposure an impact.

Super exciting player, stacks and stacks of talent. And as of now we might be in a good position to help and support him through the challenges he will undoubtedly face being so far away from home and family, and navigating the spongey floors of the hangar. I am pumped - and yep he looks great in the red and black. Go Munk - go dons!

Super duper excited

I’m unclear on the ever changing rules regarding rookies,
does there need to be a LTI for a Cat B rookie to be able to play seniors?

I don’t think so. I don’t think there’s any restrictions of rookies of any kind playing seniors any more. The only significant difference between main list and rookie listed players these days is the contract length and wage, and the only difference between rookie and rookie B listed players is eligibility.

Plus Rookie B doesn’t count in your total of 42 (?) players.

Just to tag on the full wording of the official rules:

10.16 Eligibility for Selection in the AFL Competition
A Player listed on a Club’s Category A or Category B Rookie List shall be eligible to play for the Club in the AFL Competition.

I know that was what was in his draft profile but he looks bigger than that in the highlights - might have shot up a few cm since?

I thought 188cm - according to this article anyway that was back in April.
