#45 - Tom Edwards thru 2026

Tom Edwards 1 year deal

The club is taking a risk here, but it’s the price to pay for loyalty. We’re showing that we look after our players and we back them in, as well as the medicos and HPD to get them back to their best.

I have no idea what we are paying him or how that sits within our total salary cap, but I’ll question it all the same. In addition, do you think Brad Scott discussing Sam Draper’s calf over the weekend can somehow be linked back to Tom Edwards’ ACL?

Just nail his recovery you incompetent club

Glad we showed some faith in him, I don’t think we saw the best of him in our short time with us.
In the wafl it looked like he had some real marking power

We will attract all the elite busted up players. Come to Essendon - we offer free medical.

Free does not mean good

I think he showed more than enough that an additional 12 months makes sense.

Hopefully the recovery goes well and he’s up and about for 2026.

Do you mean his 3 goals in that shootout we lost by 10 goals? Or that half he played in the practice match?

It’s a list spot and we are using it fund a player who probably won’t be able to complete a good preseason. (Is it a 12 month recovery period?

From the human side of things support him for sure, 100%.

From a footballing sense the odds are extremely slim anything will come of it, IMHU.

The shootout our future superstar, pick 10, key forward couldn’t get a kick in?

You can just as easily hype his performance that game as dismiss it.

People acting like we’ve signed him for 5 years on big money or something.

Club saw enough in him to give him a contract to play this year. In the limited games he played, they saw enough to persist despite suffering an injury.

Might work, might not. Same as taking a pick at the back end of the draft, which we’d be doing instead.

Some on BB - “why the Fark has Edwards been given a one year deal, he has shown sfa”.

Are these the same posters who are happy to keep the likes of Cox and Jones on the list for half a decade and counting, or hand out a 20 year deal to a timid plodding big defender on a salary equal to the GDP of a small country?

He showed more in the few games he played for us than half of the team. Not bad given where he came from. The club would have been following him at Swan Districts and have seen enough to make the call.

This club sure loves a premature contract extension. What if our MSD selections all show promise? Is Rosa going to pull fresh list spots out of his arse at the end of the season? Nothing against Edwards, but surely we had higher priority contacts to sure up ahead of this one.

I understand being upset at giving him one year, cos list spots are just so tight with the abundance of goalkicking superstars we have…

If that’s the case Jones should be delisted tomorrow and we take another pick in the mid season draft

Probably the same people who have suggested we look at Hunter and Baldwin again in the mid season draft

If the club feels like they’ve found one, then a 1 year extension makes sense. The alternative is to go to the draft with a late pick and try to find another key forward to play next year, who will need development and probably take a while. Edwards will probably come back from injury at the same rate that a new starter would get up to speed.

I’m personally quite impressed with Edwards and can see him becoming a regular senior player in 2027. 2026 will be a bit slow as he works out of the injury, but that’s basically what you’ll get from a draftee, just without the confidence in what you’ll get.

I don’t see a problem. He’d be cheap, and was the talk of the preseason. The club obviously love him and there will still be plenty of guys available to chop at the end of the season.

If it doesn’t work out cut at the end of next year.

It would be very surprising if the answer to the first part isn’t “the bare minimum” which means the answer to the second part is “it doesn’t, because rookie minimum payments sit outside the salary cap”.
