#46 - Lachlan Blakiston

Only way his playing is if Goldy breaks down tonight

Well hes not the sub so he won’t be playing tonight!

Wasn’t the point of getting a ruck in the msd to replace Goldy

Probably dont wanna break the guy in his first game when we get done by 60 points

But hes not gonna break down against Forte for ■■■■ sake. Forte has played less than 50 games. It doesnt get better than that. And if you really wanted to mollycoddle, make him the sub.

In the genes

Pass on our congratulations

Let’s hope he conquers the VFL first …
He does look like Blicavs though

Played exclusive key back on VFL debut and looks a likely type.

Smooth mover with really nice agility and acceleration. Very clean hands at ground level. Swings onto his left really naturally for a player of his size.

I get that they’re preparing for versatility and our key back stocks are very thin for the next month. But I’d be happy going into next season with him as the ruckman between our number one and a rapidly developing Vigo. Makes losing Draper or Bryan much less concerning and in fact maybe a decent way to add draft capital …

Looked ok, but did nothing today to make losing either of those guys less concerning. Played zero seconds in he ruck. I would’ve thought giving him some time in the ruck and throwing either May or McMahon back for a bit might’ve made sense today, but it didn’t eventuate.

I’m happy they stuck with Vigo in the ruck.
Blakiston looks to have the size and agility to actually work in the backline.
Might be a genuine chance to get a game there in the next week or two.
Will have time to show his wares in the ruck later in the year once we get one or two defenders back.

I reckon he could become a genuinely good key defender. That closing speed is exceptional.

Being able to split KPD/Ruck is pretty rare, and extremely useful. If he can do that, we’ve got a bloody good one here.

His ground level stuff suggests he’ll be good around the contest.

I’d say moving forward we persist with the fwd/ruc + ruc combo (Draper + Bryan, or wright/gerreyn/may + no. 1 ruck). If we want to capitalise on one of our current ruck’s value, then we have scope to do so now.

In doing so, it would mean Blakiston becomes backup to the no. 1 ruc role until Vigo is ready to assume that mantle.

Wasn’t he a defender who became a ruckman due to his team needing a ruck due to injury?

He is a bit old to try and turn into a KPD

Bring next week

Doubtful Its much of a long-term view.

Though it he shows he can play backup in both the ruck and down back, might take over Goldys spot on the list.

The versatility might keep him on the list, but he would be a last resort for both imo.

Vigo gets more AFL ready with every game he plays. Wright is having a mini resurgence, Gerreyne and May are both potential ruck and KPD options too. And I think we may look for another tall back at the end of the year.

I think if we lose draper or Bryan he will definitely get a gig, but if we keep both we may let him go at years end.

I do like that we chose the more mobile of the two options though, at least he might be able to keep up with the modern ruckman around the ground even if he is getting bested in the taps

Oh 100%. By replacing Goldstein I mean the “break glass in case of emergency” player.

I personally don’t think we need one, but can see the club worried about Draper/Bryan’s recovery and deciding we do (if both even stay).
Having one that could also play back if needed would be handy given our constant injury issues there too.

I’d take him over an even older Goldstein next year.
