#49 Tom Hird

Agreed re Ham, although his VFL form is usually better than Hird’s anyway (which is probably why they’ve been going with him first).

It’s pretty crazy some of the things people come up with to try and rationalise giving this guy a game.

Looking at his VFL performances…he would get absolutely destroyed at AFL level. It would be embarassing.

Take your point; but, as you’ve stated, much of that is about the positions they have played.
Seems the coaches seem to think anyone that can play mid field can automatically be adept as a small forward.
Hird has played predominately as that small forward - a position we totally lack in the AFL - yet, has been ignored. Whereas Has has played mid field in the 2’s and been chosen again, and again, and again.
Isn’t one of the definitions of stupidity doing the same thing time after time and expecting a different result?

He’s not very good. I think that’s why his papers are stamped.

IMO Alex Hird looks to be more of a prospect.

And Will is a better prospect than Alex. At least he’s not a midget

Probably not, and should be moved on; but, he has never been given the chance.
It’s not like we are in the Top 8 and fighting for a Top 4 position.

I understand that, but the only reason people want to give this kid a go is because of his name. He’s a very, very limited footballer…and I’m pretty sure people would flame Rutten for picking him when Hird gets monstered in the AFL.

I do think Alex Hird has something though. He’s stronger over the ball and has a bit more ■■■■ in him. I think he’s got potential to be a dangerous forward or inside mid

the reason is, because he’s not good enough

Guess we’ll never know :man_shrugging:

being so small and slight, he really needs a weapon or a stand out trait. unfortunately for tom, he doesn’t have one. nothing wrong with being a state league player, most guys aren’t even that

I am pretty sure that’s what Port said about Snelling when they delisted him

Hird seems to play with intensity, so perhaps that’s his. Or perhaps it’s not. But he’s surely not far from Snelling at a similar point in their journeys

snelling is a gut runner and defensively probably one of our best (he’s been rubbish lately, admittedly) and thats his stand out trait. but there’s not heaps of guys who get delisted and come back like snelling did. most guys just ride off into the sunset, so thats a testament to how hard he worked

Not really a comparison imo. Snelling had way more pedigree. U18 All Australian, SA MVP and was playing + won an SANFL flag at 17. Port never really gave Snelling a chance imo and Pigeon holed him into a role that didn’t suit his strengths.

(I mean sure but …)

you’re suggesting Snelling has better pedigree than Hird? That seems the one thing that Hird has over Snelling.

(And to compare their junior achievements is to completely ignore the context around Hird’s junior career or lack thereof)

Yep.

MVP of our hearts.

Pedigree in terms of history and experience within football. Tom has a better surname yes.

Junior career aside Will had an SANFL flag and B&F by age 20 and was 3rd in the Margery medal at 21 before we drafted him. I’m just not sure it’s a great comparison that they’re at similar points in their journeys.
