fark me, if a ■■■■■■■ pelican had the surname hird you crazies would try to slot it into the team
essendon should fold for never bring ben duscher into the afl
We’d need to have about 18 players unavailable for Tom to get a game. I’d be shocked if hes still on the list next year
As others have mentioned, he has no stand out trait that will see him make it at afl. With his build, you really want to be quick or sharp around goals. He is neither
He does look like he works hard and does the team things in the vfl, but frankly the vfl is where he should stay
Marks at the highest point
When selectors get it wrong, 79 in the national draft, probably a Nepotist pick.
Tough for Tom with that family name, also not being part of the TAC development, years out of Australian Rules development, only 2 years into the stream…
Whatever, judge him on his potential.
At the same age Snelling was dominating the SANFL averaging 36.3 disposals, 13.5 tackles and 8.5 clearances for West Adelaide before being picked by us in the mid season draft. He continued that good form when he played for our VFL team including 28 disposals, 8 tackles and 3 goals against Port Melbourne just before his club debut.
I deliberately didn’t say “age”!
Just admit you got it wrong and move on.
What point are you making? I deliberately worded it to compare Hird at his “about to be delisted” to Snelling at his “about to be delisted”. I’m quite happy to have discussions, but you’re just wading in and saying “admit you got it wrong” without actually engaging. That’s not providing value to the discussion.
Maybe Snelling was impacting more at that point as well (averaged about 23 PPG in the SANFL for PA in 2018), but Port clearly didn’t rate his attributes as AFL enough to keep him on the list. He then went and took his game to another level, and Essendon decided that they liked what he could bring.
Hird obviously has come from a long way back, and would be long odds to make it from here. At the moment he doesn’t look like he has enough AFL traits (this was my point, that just before he was delisted Snelling didn’t look like he had enough AFL traits. I’ll happily admit he probably looked closer in some aspects though). I also think it’s possible that in time Hird improves enough to have an AFL career if he keeps working. He absolutely cracks in. And he seems to run pretty well (from an endurance perspective). He also has had no AFL background as a teenager and then was covid affected at Essendon.
If you could keep on Cat B then I reckon it would be worth it. But he’s probably not an upgrade candidate.
No.
Has had 3 or 4 really good games, hasn’t strung it together enough to force the issue. IMO.
Whereas Cutler & Ham dominate more often than not.
Without the family name he doesn’t get a vfl shot he would rent to work his was up the amateur league. What a bizarre attempt at sympathy.
Doubt anyone would’ve called Will Snelling slight @ 21.
He was a meatball at 19 - and playing SANFL midfield.
Hird’s skinny, playing fwd pocket.
Mate you didn’t compare him to the right guy, Snelling is nothing like Hird and Snelling had a far better junior record than anything Hird has produced. You got it wrong, simple and easy, just admit it.
Bizarre post there from you, even more bizarre that you should interpret my post as a bizarre attempt at sympathy
Unfortunately for the lad I think VFL is probably about his ceiling. I guess he will have to decide if that is enough to fulfill him or whether he seeks something else
That is a fair point
I’m not making any judgments. There are quite a few recruited under the father son rule who don’t make it
It had me at “rent to work his was up the amateur league”.
Hird didn’t have any junior record.
The comparison was Snelling was a rookie who was delisted, presumably because Port thought he didn’t have enough traits to make it. Then he went and got better.
Their traits aren’t necessarily the same, although both were seemingly a bit “undersized” (Snelling because he was a bit short, Hird because he lacks a bit of weight), and whatever else they had didn’t seem to be enough to outweigh that. At the time (ie now for Hird).Could he improve? Sure. Snelling did. That was my point.
Anyway, everyone knows I will try and make a case for any of our players under about 24. Often stupidly.
