#5 Devon Smith

Bit harsh on 2019, played only 7 games and spent the year injured from his knee.

I’m a Devin Smith fan, but losing patience with him. I know he’s just back from injury and I give him some leeway but yes, he’s costing us with his indiscriminate frees and displays of anger. He needs to have a good look at himself if he wants to be part of our team going forward. I want the 2018 version back, but maybe that boat has left the port?

Smith just can’t have the impact he did in 18 due to his knee, he cannot move like he did so he gets frustrated and tries to impact buy being the faux tough guy and ends up giving away stupid free kicks. He needs to be able to play within himself a little more and get the best out of his body now. As a pressure forward he should be a decent option for us over the next few years. The coaches need to work with him and help him understand how he can have a positive impact on the team. He just looks like a very frustrated player to me. We have signed him for 2 more so it’s on us to help him understand his role. I’m not a fan but he can be a solid contributor and he really isn’t an urgent upgrade right now. We do need to look at a small forward this off-season though.

Can’t really blame Woosha for this; he’d left when we re-signed Smith for two more years. Still think it’s time to get over Woosha…

I think this pretty much hits the nail on the head for mine

on a slightly different note, seeing people keep using the hasn’t played for awhile line, I thought we’d turned a corner this year and that players were suppose to earn their spot and get up to speed via returning through the vfl ?

seems like that’s gone out the window after the first couple of weeks.

Similar to Melksham, in a way.
He turned it around. Hope Smith can too.

Was an interesting call. I would have liked to see him in the VFL for a week.

My assumption is that he came straight in due to a genuine lack of options to play the mid/small forward role.

Definitely an area we need to increase depth in.

You’ve missed a few, there.
Ham, BZT, Ambrose, Cahill, Caldwell, Hooker, Phillips, Shiel, Wright and a few others.
I mean - the inverse list would be a lot shorter.

Whoops my bad, Ok then. 2 really poor seasons then

Dev needs to win his own ball.
I am not sure he is a team player. IMO, other team mates know this.

I hate the undisciplined stuff and umpire backchat.
It’s too demonstrative.
Please cut it out Devon.

I don’t have a problem with his 2 year deal like everyone feels the need to bring up everytime he makes an error.
I’m not expecting the 2018 player, just play your role.

For all the mistakes yesterday, that shin kick off the ground to Hooker was very clever and the right play, considering Frost would have wrapped him up if he took possession.
I’m sure it would have been labelled lazy in the Match Thread though by the usual suspects.

It wasn’t, people could see what he was doing.

That’s good.

Yeah. The only other alternatives were Cutler and Durham, neither of which are better options in this case.

We are extremely limited in healthy small depth currently. That is going to require smalls coming back from injury without vfl time, simply so we can field 22 players.

Don’t forget Truck!

What is his actual role at the moment? He looks like he is playing half forward but putting in little defensive pressure and not getting much of the ball. Even before his injury this was the case.

You just know Melbourne will put Salem on him and Smith will let him do what he wants.

I don’t recall if anyone actually mentioned it.

The whole club has this care for each other vibe, the get around the boys type of operation is serving us well, they love playing & being together, maybe us supporters can take a leaf out of their book and get around Dev!!
