#5 Elijah Tsatas (Part 2)

You say Tsatas and 50 in the same sentence and we’re all going to assume it’s about possessions. Stay in reality.

I assume you don’t actually care what the answer is, but it means the location where the scoring chain starts (going from hitout-to-advantage, free kick, or interception to a score without an opposition possession or stoppage). So defensive half scoring is only scoring that goes uninterrupted from the back half to the goals. Going from the back line to a forward half stoppage to goal is a forward half score.

I think most coaches prefer to win the centre clearance, get it forward to a contest, and then setup to try and keep it in the forward half.

Hence halved forward 50 contests, I50 tackles and I50 ground ball gets are key metrics.

A few coaches haven’t minded losing the clearance and playing from the back half but you have to have an exceptional back six for that to happen in the 6:6:6 era.

One of our biggest challenges is that our forwards are not brilliant at halving or winning contests which means the ball tends to bounce back unconcontested.

Definitely. Look at last nights game. All the Geelong forwards are good 1on1 players and support each other well. No easy out the back release for defenders.
Our forward set up is scrambling at best.

This is such a nonsense argument with absolutely no substance behind it.

Parish at his best wins the ball and gets the handball out to merrett - this should not be considered a poor clearance. Parish in form was also one of the best mids in the league for score involvments. Parish’s problems have never been his offensive game nor his ability to get his team mates involved, they have always centered around his defensive side and that he needs a better balance.

Meanwhile, Tsatas has played 10 games and yet you’ve somehow come to this conclusion already. We gotta give the kid a chance to show what he’s capable of, otherwise another club will and we will get sfa in return.

A bit more speed of ball movement, composure and skill up the field would sure help our forwards look a bit better

You win the clearance

I do care. So in the scenario where we get a clearance, boot it forward, the ball goes straight out and into their forward line which has been setup to trap in the ball in there because the 6-6-6 rule is not in play at this point, the goal is considered a Forward Half score, despite the fact that the main reason that it is trapped in there is because the ball was intercepted and allowed the team to setup forward in a way that created the opportunity to trap the ball.

The substance behind it is the win loss records despite these players dominating clearance.

Keep playing him in the VFL and there will be no issues getting him accept a trade to WCE.

Correct.

50%?

Edit: and a percentage over 100

Exactly this and while not long ago people were raving about our clearance numbers and that’s why Tsatas isn’t playing etc.
after not playing four bottom five teams that number has come back to reality and we are now the fourth worst side in the comp at clearance and we prioritise uncontested ball which is not a winning game style.

So the fact that the ball went straight in from center clearance and rebounded out just proves my point. Much harder to trap the ball in from center clearance as you are restricted by the 6-6-6 rule. Controlling the ball off half back and getting your structure setup to trap the ball in is how these forward half chances eventuate.

Anyhow, I wasn’t clear on how the stats were formed, but thanks for clarifying. Like all stats, they don’t always reflect the true situation.

Maybe Tsatis has deficiency’s that others don’t have and has not been able to rectify.

Tsatas coming in will not help the lack of skill that our team already possesses.

Thats a symptom of the team isnt it? Rather than singling out a player.

Id argue our best year over the last 10 years was 2021 when Parish was the stand out.

Our midfield has been rubbish this year, hardly beating the bottom sides and being spanked by the top sides.

Clearances dropped with Shiel out too.

Stringer was in Dusty type form in 2021. This allowed Parish and Merrett to play their own games.

I think rather it is the other way around, Parish and Merrett in good form allowed Stringer to play his own style.
