50 Worst Essendon Losses since 2000 (countdown)

Thread Primer

After such a miserable 2025 season, I thought I’d try to remind myself that this season’s lows weren’t a whole lot lower than many others that I’ve seen in my lifetime. Call me insane, but I’ve come up with a highly disputable list of the top 50 Essendon losses since the 2000 season. Hoping at least one other Blitzer out there might get a kick out of reflecting on some of the most despairing times of the last 25 years.

Each day, I’ll aim to add a very brief summary of each match including a couple of notes that may help remind you why the loss deserves to be on the list.

Keen to hear which games stick out in the minds of everyone else on the forum, or whether the list triggers any long-forgotten memories.

The loss against Melbourne when they were winless and we were near top of the ladder. It was round 10 2012.

Notes

  • AKA “The Mark McGough game”
  • Wet weather footy.
  • Signalled the end of Essendon’s era as the powerhouse of Victoria and a serious flag contender.

There were some I had to cull which can consider themselves lucky not to be dredged up.

2017 Sydney game. Gary Rohan marking on the goal line to win it. That game hurt.

So did the 2017 final against them.

Bulldogs game where they kicked 750 goals in a row.

Losing the 2014 Elimination Final to the Tin Rattlers. We were 27 points up at half time. Ben Brown school Ariel Steinberg

Ryder’s announcing his decision to leave that week was horrendous timing.

thats the one.

This is why I dispute that we were contenders during that era.

Only the delusional nut jobs think we were competing, we were no where near it

Many claim that the Saga was the reason we didn’t contend.

Like I said, nut jobs

This triggers a game well before 2000, when we were smashed by the Tigers at Windy Hill. It seemed like the whole Members stand boo-ed the team off the field, in the Outer where I was we just sat and continued drinking and watched Essendon supporters punch on with each other. A totally tragic day.

When the Doggies kicked twenty something goals in a row at Marvel not so long ago should have got the same outcome, but I guess we are all just accepting of our crappiness !

Love hearing about the bad times that I wasn’t around for. I’ll have to go digging for which game against the Tigers you’re referring to.

I reckon there are at least five games from 2015 which could make this list.

99 prelim has to be right up there.

Edit: probably should have read the title of the thread.

The 2010 loss to West Coast (The Lecras game) was pretty embarrassing.

We are spoilt for choice, but Dogs in 2019 would be up there. 21 goals in a row for them makes me wanna :face_vomiting:.

Melbourne would have four wins for the year around that time and two of them would be against us.
