50 Worst Essendon Losses since 2000 (countdown)

Lost in the noise between our blown chances in 99 and 01 and the subsequent three-peat by Brisbane is that the Port side of that era also should have won more than one.

They had a very, very good side in the early 00s but couldn’t stop punching themselves in the ■■■■ when it came finals time.

Must’ve been Roger James i was thinking of

And Paddy Ryder chase down. Thought that would get us going, clearly not

When Mitch Robinson, one of the more profoundly unskilled players I’ve seen forge a career, slotted one from deep in the pocket early in the second, you knew it was over.

Elimination Final 2014

North Melbourne 2.3.15 2.4.16 9.5.59 14.9.93
Essendon 2.4.16 6.7.43 10.8.68 12.9.81

Notes

  • AKA “The Drew Petrie game”

  • AKA “The Ariel Steinberg game”

  • North kicked 5 goals in 12 minutes during the 3rd QTR to cut the margin from 33 to 3.

  • Not a terrible loss on paper given pre-game expectations, but at halftime Essendon was in the box seat to end a 10-year drought without a finals win. We all know how that drought has gone since.

I suspected I’d cop it for posting this one so early. There are some truly bad losses still to come, though few will live as long in the memory as this one, I admit. With this list, I’m generally placing more emphasis on expectation vs outcome, which is why this one is so low. If I was basing the list off immediate anger/heartbreak, this would have to be top 5. We were all so invested at half time.

The there could be a thread devoted to how a combination of bad decisions and sometimes, outright bad luck have played into out lack of finals success. Stienberg only played because of injuries.

Imagine if Tippa had been available for the 21 final?

What year was the final where stupidly elected to have Lovett-Murray play ruck? The final was in Adelaide and I think we had both Fletcher and Lloyd out injured.

2001 FC loss. My first FC match. My first experience with FC supporters. A night that I want to forget so many years later but can’t.

That was hell…. I can only wonder how bad 99 was. It just floored me that we could drop a game to that mob so soon after whilst it was still fresh.

2001 was weird. I remember the preseason fixture against Port where they just looked absolutely useless. Obviously it didn’t matter but there was just this gut feeling that something was off about that team right from the beginning of the year.

2009 - Our first final since 2004 and first post-Sheedy. It’s as if that night scarred us for good.

Not sure why Fletch was out but if you want to know why Lloydy was missing, you’ll be able to ask Brad Sewell who’s just woken up

I’m not sure what was worse: the second half capitulation, or the gloating of the North fans sitting behind me at the game.

There’s a lot to unpack in that loss. Fletcher being out absolutely killed us, but we were the best part of six goals ahead early in the second half and a lead like that should never be squandered, let alone in a final against an opponent of that quality. I thought Bomber Thompson, after delivering a masterclass in our round 1 win against North that season, made a couple of very poor decisions in that final (not going again with Hocking tagging Wells, and starting a completely undercooked Gleeson on the field ahead of Dempsey).

In my opinion, that match is perhaps the most damaging loss the club has had in the past 15 years. Thinking back on it now, more than a decade later, it is still utterly agonising.

Further to this, Geelong were awful in the subsequent final against North. There’s a real chance we could have had a deep finals campaign that year.

While we would not have beaten Sydney in the prelim, a couple of MCG finals wins would have been great for the morale of the club.

thats the only time ive seen us get close to winning a final in my 21 odd years of following football.

Think that when we knew Daniher was carrying an injury, couldn’t even run, was just taking stupid leaps and giving away free kicks

What the hell happened to Geelong that day

Turns out this game was the first game Daniher missed due to OP. Smack came into the side and kicked 2.2 for his first game of the year.
