Round 7 2003

Richmond 4.2.26 6.8.44 10.13.73 11.18.84
Essendon 0.2.2 3.6.24 4.8.32 5.12.42

Notes

  • No rain despite what the scoreline may suggest.

  • Richmond lined up without a recognisable key forward. Matthew Richardson didn’t play and a young Jay Schulz didn’t get a touch from his 5% of time on ground.

  • James Hird went off injured in the 1st QTR. He would miss 5 matches and still only finish 3 votes behind the eventual Brownlow Medal winners.

  • Jason Winderlich debuted for Essendon.

  • Essendon finished 8th on the ladder and won an Elimination final, while Richmond eventually finished 13th.

  • Mark Johnson took an absolute hanger in the final minutes.

His 2003 season was incredible, and would have won a second Brownlow were it not for injuries. I feel like this is often forgotten even amongst Essendon supporters. He was playing amazing football.

Was that the year he had that horrific collision vs Freo and had the face plate?

The year after.

This game was poo. Absolute poo.

Richmond were awful and Essendon were even more awful.

I remember a putrid Essendon loss where Mark Johnson took an absolute hanger in the waning minutes. Might have been that game.

What’s that?

The game you play in after winning the wildcard playoff.

Yep, it was this game. I’ll add it to the notes.

I remember this being the straw that broke the camel’s back for Matthew Knights.

I think Pendlebury, Swan and Cloke were the three best on ground which seemed to be the case every time against Collingwood.

Oh, this was the game Zaharakis ripped his quad and never really got back to the development arc he looked like he was set upon. Still became a very good player, but there were times across 2009-10 it looked like he was going to become a genuine A-grade mid.

Never quite got back to that after this injury.

My recollection of that game was sitting in the outer alone as my friend had bailed at the last second, listening to a group of Filth supporters complain about the umpiring constantly, even as their team was kicking goal after goal.

I mean, he did win the BnF the very next season.

As I said, still became a very good player.

But as I recall, he was looking as the guy who’d be the speed/class to work with Watson in the Essendon midfield, and then it never really eventuated.

I reckon there was a knee injury in 2012 that put the brakes on him.

But 2011 was his best season. He looked A grade that year.

Maybe I’m confusing the two injuries?
