#6 Jye Caldwell - thru 2028

A slightly taller/bigger Parish

Still won’t solve our inside mid issue.

Draft a tall big fckin inside mid Essendon

Just some perspective on the trade ‘value’,

GWS wanted a first rounder for him, we said we didn’t think it was worth that much.

Well, Pick 29 + Future 2nd (assume Pick 28 ish) is equivalent to Pick 11 (draft value index)

[edit] Include the late pick we got back (44) and it bumps it back a few spots but not much. Pick 74 is worth zero ‘points’

So we gave up a Pick 11-14 range for this guy, which is equivalent to a mid first round pick.
He was originally a Pick 11 in 2018

Basically GWS got the trade value they wanted

Did we pay overs?
Only time will tell.

We have been saying for years that we need a one or two good ‘big bodied’ mids, well I think Dunkley was that guy, not Caldwell. Size wise.

Caldwell might be a great pick-up though, let’s wait and see how he develops, all the best to him.

We also received picks 44 & 74 in return.

Who knows whether we paid unders or overs yet. I definitely like what I have seen of him and Giants rated him very highly.

“If I was going to put a 10-year contract in front of anyone, I’d put it in front of Jye Caldwell. I just love Jye,” Davis told AFL.com.au at Captains Day on Friday.

"He’s tough and he kicked this goal against Sydney the other day off two steps on the run and I was like ‘That’s special’. Every now and again you get glimpses.

"Don’t get me wrong. If Tim Taranto wants to sign for 10 years and Jacob Hopper wants to sign for 10 years, we’ll take them as well.

“I think we’ve seen enough of Tim to see he’s going to be a star, but for those we haven’t seen a lot, I think Jye is something really special.”

Can’t wait to see this young fella in action, has a bit of Lenny Hayes about him

I think he slots straight into the team on the HF or HB flank

Yeah.
So this is all you need to know.

Models his game on J.Selwood
But he’s faster …more tricks.

Magic fairy dust.

It’s good to get someone who actually wants to be at EFC! And we still have three First Round Draft picks in what is supposed to be a shallow draft.

I think this will prove to be an astute trade in years to come.

  • Can win his own ball

  • Kicks on both sides

  • Above average pace

  • Solid overhead

  • Can create his own shots at goal

Obviously he’s still relatively untested but his skillset screams somebody that can develop into a very good player. The thing that sets the very best apart from the rest is the ability to impact the game in more than one way. He can develop into that style of player.

Shiel, Parish, Heppell and to a lesser degree Merrett are all one dimensional and if they are having a poor game it is very difficult to hide them.

Recruiting players that can impact in different ways is what we have been trying to achieve for the last half decade but with mixed results.

How are you today after the miss on Dunkley.

Alls well that’s Caldwell

Bit flat to be honest.

Hope he’s still interested in coming to us next year.

Pressure is on the club now to nail the draft and provide the young players with an environment that can help them achieve their potential.

Something we haven’t been very good at for some time.

I rate Jye from what i’ve seen, the only problem is he is small and skinny like all our other mids.

not unexpected, but maybe next year.

Good to see Dodoro finally recruit a contested ball player in Caldwell - the 180 degree opposite to Cutler.

It’s almost a shame that we got involved with Dunkley as this kid should also get our excitement.

Very highly rated by many it seems and great to have next to MCG as a combo for years ahead.

Great to have him onboard.

I agree, the Dunkley regret is stopping people enjoying the fact that we picked up Jye.
Can’t wait to see the kid in action next year.

Yes, from all reports the shallowness starts after the first five. Just in time for our pick at #6.

Oh, I think the shallowness starts way, way, way before pick 6.
