#7 Zerrett - could double his Crichton/Trevor Barkers by 2027

Currently 2nd favourite. And commentators are regularly, and rightfully, frothing over him from what I’ve seen.
Not sure he is under the radar.

Now THAT was a Captain’s game.

■■■■ we’re blessed to have this bloke.

I love it when he finds another gear and puts the team on his back. Very much a captain’s performance.

Given our newfound midfield depth, our lack of small forward options, how dangerous he is, and the potential to ease his week to week workload so as to ensure his longevity, playing him forward quite a bit makes sense to me.

Plus 3 Brownlow votes

Gee I hope he leads us to our next period of success. I think he can, the example he sets is of the highest quality and a few more are jumping on board with him. Nothing would give me more joy than to see him become a premiership captain…

Edge worthy

Been said before but who ever voted for
Him to be out of the leadership group should have a good hard look at themselves.

I know he had to work on a few things but geeze it would of been nice to have him captain a few years earlier

He’s a much better player than Heeney

The sad thing is he’s so good defensively, and tackles so much, that it’s kind of russian roulette with the new high(/low?) bar for suspension for rough tackles.

Someone will lose a Brownlow in the next few years after a pretty marginal/unlucky tackle (or an outright great tackle that happens to have an unlucky result). They’ll change the rules once it’s too late. I hope it doesn’t happen to Zach.

what annoys me about the merrett commentary is that he’s added defensive edge to his game.

i know he himself mentioned it in the media but i think that was more about bringing other players with him.

he’s been one our best tacklers for a long time and he’s not even producing career best numbers at the moment

it might have dropped away a bit for a few years but clearly he rediscovered it rather than added it to his game

If he maintains that goal, disposal, clearance and tackle average all year, he’s going to go damn close to winning a Brownlow. Those are absolutely elite numbers in combination.

Yep thought the same thing when I started hearing that too, been our best tackler for years now.

Speaks volumes about the kind of “leaders” we have had since Watson.

All a bunch of “nice blokes” who didn’t know how to grit the teeth and win.

My youngest of 4 kids started Auskick on Saturday. My son was the only of 35 kids in Bombers gear but was awesome to hear when he slotted a nice goal in a drill that the guy running it yelled out “great goal Zachy Merrett”.

Love that he’s finally getting the respect across the league that he’s deserved for a long while

My daughter, who doesn’t love footy, was at a praccy at Princess Park many years ago when Merrett was not long in the system . I asked her who was her fav player and she said “number 7” as he looks like a kid so I bought her a badge. Great choice!!
