#7 Zerrett - could double his Crichton/Trevor Barkers by 2027

Thread is going sideways..

But well done to those undermining our skipper. At a time we as a club could do without.

The irony is, through all of these 20+ years of mediocrity we currently do have a decent football captain called Zach Merrett. And if we had a truly decent coach and list manager over recent times, we’d be more than competitive. Its true..

But what do I know .. nought, null, zero.

If Merrett left I would give Redman a shot with Durham, Caldwell and Roberts deputies.

You would obviously need to Cannon Brad to keep McGrath from taking the reigns though.

Mate, the body language was terrible. That’s on him. He’s our captain, we need someone to guide the kids.

I both understand and am disappointed in his on-field output lately. The team desperately needs a beacon to follow and he’s consistently missing targets he used to hit in his sleep.

Imagine absolutely busting your arse in a job for 10+ years, outperforming all your colleagues by an almost immeasurable distance, and every year the company’s losses get worse and it gets deeper entrenched in a void of hopelessness.

If he’s had enough the only surprising thing would be that it has taken this long.

If Merrett has checked out, you would need to know why?

While it would be great if Merritt didn’t outwardly show those moments of frustration, I understand and don’t think it means he is being a poor leader. Unfortunately for him, he’s a lone hand, he desperately needs another uncompromising 2IC.

He mentioned earlier in the year on 360 that he’s had to adjust the way he communicates with the team. I don’t think he wants to though, I think he would thrive in absolute honesty, and it probably grates on him that senior players around him are too precious to hear it. I reckon that would be a major frustration for him.

For me, that’s on the club, not Merritt. They should back him in to be honest and harsh when needed, and with that he needs to hear it too. And I actually thought coming in that that would be Scott’s MO, which we needed after Rutten openly copping disrespect from players. Sadly it isn’t, senior players can serve up any garbage and nothing changes (and I have massive doubts anything is said other than “learnings”).

McGrath is the exact opposite to what Merritt, and the team, needs as a VC. McGrath might be a perfect leader for helping young players adjust, train and prepare, but he totally lacks the ruthlessness to be drive on field performance.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Merret apprenlty was frustrated when did it happen?

The Captain gets a free pass. The Coach gets a free pass.

Whose next? We’re giving away free passes like lollies!

Loving this new Essendon. So much accountability.

@centipede2 - what do you want them to do? Step down? Make a media comment?

It’s a sad state of on field leadership affairs at the moment.

Merrett is hands down the best option as captain that we have got.

From everything, ability, leadership style, tenure at club, achievements etc.

BUT he does lack something.

Support. He seriously lacks support. McGrath would have to be the worst VC in the league. Langford never plays and Redman would equally be the worst DVC in the league.

He needs someone else of similar age to drive standards, expectations and on field leadership. You know who id throw the bank at for pure leadership and culture. Jarrod Berry

I bet you would struggle to name the vice captains of the other teams.

Fans that are happy to let go Merret hope you enjoy McGrath being captain haha

Give the captaincy to Sam Draper. Watch the great man set up Max Gawn-like and grab the attention of the Lockeroom.
