#7 - Zerrett - New Beginnings

I feel like we are straying into areas where this thread may need a holiday.

Why? If she doesn’t want the attention, STFU and go have drinks without making a derogatory comment about the club half way through the match.

Correct assumption.

Just for a bit.

Loved his run down tackle late in the game yesterday on one of the Pickett brothers (I think). That was great to see.

Merretts radio interview with 3aw after the game was very enlightening

Did he say anything about his team mates getting paid too much, and he deserves a pay rise?

Could you elaborate for those of us who didn’t hear it?

Sorry I tried for 10 mins to link it but I have no idea how to do it, maybe someone smarter than myself can

Basically said without the Captaincy he’s got more time to spend with the younger players talked up the group dynamics seems reengaged

Also said after the game younger blokes has different mindset at 3/4 time

Older guys would think how do we hang on

Younger guys said let’s go and crush them

And that’s Merret’s way of thinking.

In an ironic way a rebuild and picking up a few attitudinally aligned younger guys could totally reinvigorate Merret’desire and belief.

Maybe the list isn’t going nowhere after all.

This is precisely the hope and why Rosa / Scott made him feel a factor in list management re seeking his input into what the list needs and his response to our actual draft.

Once we decided not to let him go, I figured that 2026 post season events will hinge largely on whether the younger players provide us (and Merrett) a sense of excitement and upwards trajectory, and whether the senior players cope with him still being around. I still think that.

I think you are 100% on that, and IMHO if other senior guys aren’t on board, don’t let the door hit your arseonthe way out.

I can’t wait for Martin to get back in, there is much potential In our last two/three crops of draftees end/pre/mid or whatever.

Merret continues to showcase his importance around the ground as a leader by example.

He has never displayed a loser mentality and so, has never properly fit in. Maybe  now he might feel like he’s gonna fit in. The place is starting to get a bit of a Hawks post Watson draft vibe about it.

It depends whether he is true to his words or not.

He has constantly said he wants to see success and whilst our young brigade is showing glimpses of what can come we are still 3-4 years away from seeing the fruits of our Labour and still need to draft well the next 2 years and of course there is no guarantees that it works out smoothly.

I’m still betting that he has zero intention to stay and will absolutely ask to leave again but all I ask is that he cracks in the rest of the year and hopefully it’s a smooth transfer out

If I was him, if I’m not getting traded to Brisbane, I’m not going anywhere.

They are going to continue to be the team to beat for the foreseeable future, and without Gunston the Hawks are farked.

And how long has he got left him at his current rate of output?

Chol is okay but he is a bit like a broken hot water tap, you never know if it’s gonna run hot or not.

If our young brigade, progress somewhat similarly to the likes of Watson at the Hawks,I think we have a lot more of them and so could see rapid progression in a shorter period of time than three or four years.

It’s going to be fascinating to watch us across the rest of this season, because unlike many around here I was never thinking we couldn’t win games and never thought for a moment we were gonna get the wooden spoon.

Oh, I still think we are bottom 4 this year and always though 4 or 5 wins tops and I haven’t wavered on that even after yesterday.

I have no concern over the kids but still far too many doubts over our seniors week in and week out and still want to see a stack turned over at seasons end. I really hope the club doesn’t think the job is anywhere near done and realise that we still need to nail the next couple of drafts.

I know it’s fashionable to hate the Hawks, I mean we all do but not sure how anyone can sit there and think they are nothing without Gunston. I hate the buggers but their list is pretty decent and they have a good coach, they will see finals for a few more years yet
