That’s the key, we will land a pick in the teens and a second rounder, so in the end it will more or less balance out - plus we stood our ground with Hawthorn, which in my opinion was worth the short-term downside of keeping Merrett

Extremely good point and Cameron was and still is a bonafide match winning player, but you forget that it was Geelong he was traded to and Geelong not only always get their man, they get a bonus free first round pick, an injured former pick 2, and a hand job from HQ every trade they do and nobody blinks an eye. They sure must give away a lot of beach side farming property up there.

I really would like to see him play VFL the rest of the year.
He wants to leave and only wants to go Hawks again.

I really hope we don’t let him go cheap as well. Would rather burn a ■■■■ first rounder from the Hawks and keep him on the list another 12 months.

The guy’s given us 12 years of fantastic service. Club’s given him nothing but ■■■■. Yes, he gets special treatment, to a degree.
It doesn’t, at all, follow that we’d let everyone move to anywhere they want, at any price. It’s a really simplistic dichotomy.

I wonder if Richmond fans are as resentful to Bolton, Baker and Rioli as many are to Merrett? Those blokes left the moment things got tough and in the middle of their primes.
As you say, Merrett has given us years of service and we have given him nothing.

True but I think him going nuclear rather than do what Butters is currently doing (who is in a better position because he’s out of contract) has cost him a lot of goodwill

I do think he made the trade request too late and clearly the club felt blindsided by him having that meeting with Mitchell.
Mate it was a circus, an absolute circus.

Respectfully, I feel like you might have either not quite grasped the initial post and my subsequent response or perhaps you’ve inferred a bit more from it than was intended.
Merrett never formally made a trade request to the club last year.
He made it known through his manager and leaks to the media he wanted to be traded to the Hawks, and only the Hawks, but never asked the club directly to be traded.
He told Brad Scott in person, at his house. I think that counts.
