I agree they might get the execution wrong but my point was around its overarching approach as a football club. Forget the X’s and O’s for a second. As a Club, it has had enough of being pushed around and its standing up for itself….. It still has to make good footy decisions but that’s not really the point I’m trying to make.

Zach not attending the B&F would be incredible. On one hand, another major embarrassment for Essendon and its fans, but on the other, a car crash level of can’t look away cringe that promises to be highly entertaining. I wonder how the club would handle the situation. I wonder if they’d still livestream it or instead limit the audience to only those who attended. Could be quite the fiasco. Zach rocking up to preseason training after the trade falls over would also have excellent entertainment value. Amazing time to be a bomber fan.

I don’t buy this. He makes the Hawks a proper GF contender. The way the comp works now, everything needs to align beautifully, and opportunities don’t come up every day. It’s debatable, but I believe Merrett is a top 10 player in the comp. He virtually never misses a game either, he’s a sure thing. He’s worth more to Hawthorn where they’re at than just about any other club in the AFL. Mitchell is a ■■■■, but he’s not stupid, he knows this. The club has said he’s untradable, but everybody knows there’s a price. The hawks will fold like a cheap suit.

I think he has to be traded but I would gladly say to his manger anyone bar Hawthorn and if it’s only Hawthorn then we need a best 22 of theirs otherwise hold him to the contract. You need try and upset Hawthorn’s team unity by getting them to put up a player the team doesn’t want to lose. Not sure who that would be honestly - possibly someone like Dear or Newcombe which they won’t do. Hardwick would be good for us particularly if Ridley goes.

I understand it’s not tenable that Zach stays but getting pick 8 and then picks in the high teens or early 20s over the next two years isn’t exactly what we need. If we get a band 1 for Draper then we really don’t need another pick this year.

Ridley I would trade - poor form to meet Brisbane after being told we won’t trade you. Typical Connors I guess. He has 4 years left so again what has Brisbane got to offer? Late first round picks are not that much help at least not this year I again want a ready made best 22.

One thing’s clear, for all the talk of getting ruthless and being our own club again, we don’t need to look any further than Mitchell at Hawthorne. Looks like he’s going to successfully pry two captains out of massive clubs in one year, doesn’t give a fark about media or being hated, has his young team rolling in a short space of time, has only one thing in mind and that’s a GF win this year, next year and beyond.

The only thing I can fault with your logic here is that it’s Merrett and his management that have approached the Hawks this year, not like the Saints last year.

Merrett has shown us his true colours.

I don’t think him staying is now an option.

The club has to say ‘he will never be traded’ to make him even more valuable to the broader marketplace.

My issues are these

1. Wherever he goes the deal has to be great for the club.
2. He cannot get to Hawthorn. This is now very serious. Every improvement from where they are right now increases the chance of another flag for them. Merrett could be the difference and that is unacceptable to an Essendon supporter
3. If Hawthorn is the only option then NO DEAL. I’d rather Merrett play VFL the rest of his life or retires. ■■■■ him.

This may be a catalyst for many positives. The anger and comments from players suggests a unity and determination needed to improve and expose leaders. Martin has been fantastic. And Scott and the club might grow a pair and start to show all and sundry that we are down but not ■■■■■■■ outl

I recall he was a very big problem for a while when he was younger, they had drama with him, then a switch flicked and he came good
