#7 Zerrett - Welcome to Hotel California

Sure, let’s get rid of our best player.

Have to say the Buckley comment didn’t really seem that bad in context. These footy functions has past players a lot more blunt to please crowds.

Buckleys last year coaching was 2021. So we are talking likely 5-6 years ago at least. Saying that it seems he has f&@$ talked to everyone seems more like a joke to a footy paid event crowd.

i have my issues with Zach but for me that whole article is a bit of nothing and some mischievous fun by Bucks to entertain a function

I’d rather lose every game for the next two seasons if it means a full club reset and we can get some fresh air. If that means our captain (who turns 30 next week) whose reputation has suffered irreparable damage over the last few weeks has to go… then so be it.

What are your Zach issues?

My main issue is when you agree to be captain then you agree to be 100% committed to the club, leading the club to success and bringing along 40 players to inspire, mentor and help motivate. If you’re unsure internally on direction for years(talking to Saints last year)…then simply don’t agree to then be the Captain. If he wasn’t on the leadership group…. my attitude to him looking elsewhere would be quite different. But he agreed to be the leader and has to accept his responsibility then. If we are not going well…. whats then your role off field on this Zach? What can YOU do better as captain to progress the players quicker. Not how can i get out after a tough year that had a lot of bad luck associated with it.

Tell me how you feel at season end 2027 if your wish come true.

Some more top 4 picks and plenty more kids through the door. Bring it on

I think a few people will and it’s not going to be pretty for the Zach or the club, I wonder if Welsh/Hird considered that when they claimed that he must stay at all costs.

If he stays, it will only be for another year.

Cash in now and unite the playing group.

People are very satisfied with finishing 12th every year.

Just happy to attend some competitive games so they can have some pleasant days at the football.

F*ck premierships.

If you think we are suddenly jumping up into flag contention next year or 2027, you’re delusional.

If you want to win 6-7 games and eventually finish 13th or 14th to feel good about yourself, then so be it.

I don’t know anyone who has been pleased with our 10th-12th placings.

Then what’s the sacrifice the club is willing to make, to build a Premiership quality list?

That sacrifice is being sh*t for a few seasons.

If you’re not happy about that…. Then you’re happy being mediocre.

The ones that don’t want to move on their favoured players or embrace a rebuild for starters. The club has always refused to bottom out whether that is through self interest or being scared of member backlash who knows but it’s pathetic really

Well said. It seems to me, the issue most supporters have, is not with Merrett’s commitment on game day - it is obvious that he gives his all - but with the whole the “game / club owes me and I’m entitled to take it” attitude that has emerged in the media.

As supporters we need to accept that for over a decade we have lurched from one crisis to another devolving from a powerhouse that oppo supporters hate, to almost being irrelevant.

We have a generation of kids out there who have never seen us anything but mediocre. It has to change!

It is only the next iteration of players, coaches and administrators that MAY change the malaise that is 21st century EFC.

Thank-you Zac , you are not the problem but your attitude is mired in the self-interest common to losing cultures.

The EFC absolutely needs to draw a line in the sand.

I’m all in for a rebuild. If we can get a first and future first for Merrett and finish with 3 x top 10 draftees this year plus whatever we do with our Draper compo and 2x 2nd rounders plus our 2024 and 2023 kids we should be set up for a really exciting year watching their development the next 2 years and hopefully start realising potential in 2028/29.

Meh. I don’t mind if a throwaway line adds to the the media pile-on for Merrett.

How have we arrived at this conclusion?

The comment is rubbish.

Speak in haste, repent at leisure.

There is every chance that his discussion with Buckley was at the time he was last out of contract so absolutely no issues if that was the case. I think it probably was a quip at a lunch and Buckley made it just off the cuff, but clearly it’s been a pattern over the last few years.
