Ehh, I think when these young guys still get a crack at AFL level and know what they have to build on, the risk of them requesting a trade out reduces. When blokes don’t get a game at all and are killing it in the VFL, that’s higher risk.

3rd or 4th rounder. Has shown bugger all as an inside midfielder or an outside anything

More likely that the club (and agent) are putting it out there

People have short memories of Hobbs and what he can do, he’ll play with 200 games for us.

People don’t have short memories. It’s just very hard to see how he fits into our midfield.
Merrett, Parish, Durham, Caldwell, Perkins, Setterfield are all ahead of him. Fair chance that Tsatas will be by the start of next season.
It’s just hard to see him getting a regular game in his preferred position. He’s doing ok as a half-forward, but it’s hard to see him ever being a gun in that role and if we ever get a couple of decent small forwards he’ll struggle to get a game.

It wouldn’t be surprising at all if he looks for more opportunity elsewhere

I reckon he might but he would wait until the end of his contract. Back yourself to have one more crack and if it doesn’t work out then look at other options.

At least gives him a shot at increasing his value when he is out of contract, whether that be at EFC or elsewhere.

It’s almost like time doesn’t matter to some posters. “We can’t fit Hobbs, a relative infant, in the team cos Parish, Merrett, Caldwell et al…”. Because those guys are just going to stay 26-7 for the next decade aren’t they?

He’s part of the midfield succession, we’d be nuts to trade him and we won’t.

This and when we’re a list that’s perennially injured, you’ve got to have depth in the now whilst developing for the handover as you said.

He’s a bit unique is Hobbs
Zach is Zach of course. Pure class.
Parish isn’t as tough inside as Hobbsy.
Duz and Calders, sure are now our preferred mids and long may that continue.

But Ben Hobbs this time last year was our glue and undroppable. We so needed him for his stoppage pressure. He was excellent and many of us have short memories. I, like a few others marked him up as a future skipper. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t.

Hobbsy is an out and out Bomber. He’s no trade bait or whatever ■■■■■ being offered up here. He’s the type of player you invest in … because he’ll be the one helping lead that midfield in a few years time. Not shining right now but the one you want straight in when it all gets tough later on in this season.

He’s not as bash and crash, but he sticks his head in all the same holes.

Why deal in facts?

Setterfield ahead of Hobbs ?

None of the guys ahead of him are going anywhere for 3 or 4 years. Do you really think he’s going to hang around that long waiting for a chance to play in his preferred position?

That’s obvious. Whenever Setterfield has been fit he’s played in the midfield

No one is trading Hobbs, you need to plan for the future, he is apart of the future.

He’s had a very injury interrupted year, his beat is quite good

I think the evolution of durham, Caldwell and perkins have hurt him

He’s been unlucky around injury this year which sucks but its absolutely a real scenario that one of our mids will end up pushed out imo, and he seems the last rated out of that younger group.

Whilst we might not want to trade him, I’d imagine a few clubs would be able to offer him more midfield minutes than he currently gets with us

I think the game is trending away from players in the style of hobbs and libba, your mids need a balance of inside/outside, marking, good ball use, dynamism and a bit of height, so like WOB said, arhcie, durham and calldwell can do either all of those things or slightly lacking in 1 area, hobbs really needs to improve his outside and ball use to even be in the conversation of getting an afl shot in the midfield

He’s too slow, indecisive and ordinary kick to be an outside player. There’s only one position he can have a career and he’s not being played there……what does that say……
