I posted the following in another thread in October:
1991 - 2022 National Draft Data ---- (No preseason, rookie listed players etc are included)
I’ve spent the day looking at National Draft Data. It is still a work in progress. Figures are from footywire. Needs review. Constructive feedback appreciated. Working on it tomorrow.
DISCLAIMER: This only offers a snapshot to potentially provide insights into club drafting performance. There are many many limitations which includes the 2016 season as an example.
National Drafted Player Game Averages at Drafted Club
If you are drafted to one of the following clubs via the National Draft, you will average the corresponding career games at that club based on 1991 to 2022 data.
Team | Average Games Played * |
---|---|
Hawthorn | 60.26 |
Geelong | 56.41 |
Essendon | 55.25* |
Richmond | 50.59 |
Collingwood | 48.19 |
- Only games played at drafted club are included.
- I have chosen not to adjust this figure to account for the suspensions in 2016.
Limitations
- Using player game team averages might not accurately reflect the quality of drafted talent.
- There might be variations in clubs’ strategies; some might provide more game opportunities to players with less potential, while others might have a more stringent or selective approach, focusing on high-potential talents.
Currently Active and Remaining AFL Team Listed Players Drafted via National Draft
Club | Active Players (National Draft) |
---|---|
Hawthorn | 33 |
Geelong | 32 |
Richmond | 30 |
Collingwood | 29 |
Essendon | 26 |
Notes
- These numbers include players that have switched clubs yet are still AFL listed.
Top 5 Essendon National Drafts Based on Games Played

Overview
- Somewhat expected
- I have not adjusted these figures to account for 2016. I don’t believe it would have a material effect on averages since the majority of players either retired, were delisted or switched clubs that year.
