I see. Number of games played = talent. Good to know.
all i can remember is Ben Brown on Ariel Steinberg.
And the Ryder drama leading in to the final, then Ryder playing out of his skin.
Probably a bit controversial, but Bomber Thompson was the best coach we have had for last 20 years.
Looking back now and watching that game I think our current crop could be so much better.
Does anyone believe that games played is any way to measure the success of a draft pick or trade regardless of the outcomes of those games. I would strongly suggest getting more games into poorer performing players is part of the reason why the club has had no team success for so long. When a club is continually finishing mid table at best then the proper list management response should be less games from those players who failed, not more. Lower finishing teams should, by design, have higher player turnover & therefore less games into the same players.
It’s only 10 years ago…but I recall Ryder had a poor game and was beaten by goldy.
Both had good games I guess.
Goldy won more hitouts, Ryder kicked that big bender of a goal.
Bellchambers probably rucked more than their second ruck.

kicked a massive BENDAAAAA tnough

A club needs to play 22 players in every game, regardless of how sh*t they might be.
Games played is an absolute pointless assessment of success.

Games played is an absolute pointless assessment of success.
yeah, nah, maybe 50 game milestone is not huge, ie gifted games, but have a look at the guys who have played 300+, not any spuds there.
I posted the following in another thread in October:
1991 - 2022 National Draft Data ---- (No preseason, rookie listed players etc are included)
I’ve spent the day looking at National Draft Data. It is still a work in progress. Figures are from footywire. Needs review. Constructive feedback appreciated. Working on it tomorrow.
DISCLAIMER: This only offers a snapshot to potentially provide insights into club drafting performance. There are many many limitations which includes the 2016 season as an example.
National Drafted Player Game Averages at Drafted Club
If you are drafted to one of the following clubs via the National Draft, you will average the corresponding career games at that club based on 1991 to 2022 data.
Team | Average Games Played * |
---|---|
Hawthorn | 60.26 |
Geelong | 56.41 |
Essendon | 55.25* |
Richmond | 50.59 |
Collingwood | 48.19 |
- Only games played at drafted club are included.
- I have chosen not to adjust this figure to account for the suspensions in 2016.
Limitations
- Using player game team averages might not accurately reflect the quality of drafted talent.
- There might be variations in clubs’ strategies; some might provide more game opportunities to players with less potential, while others might have a more stringent or selective approach, focusing on high-potential talents.
Currently Active and Remaining AFL Team Listed Players Drafted via National Draft
Club | Active Players (National Draft) |
---|---|
Hawthorn | 33 |
Geelong | 32 |
Richmond | 30 |
Collingwood | 29 |
Essendon | 26 |
Notes
- These numbers include players that have switched clubs yet are still AFL listed.
Top 5 Essendon National Drafts Based on Games Played
Drafted Year | Average Games | Notes |
---|---|---|
2014 | 120.0 | Problem average since only 2 players drafted. Adjusted figure probably 90ish |

2008 | 105.2 | - |
2007 | 104.5 | *Darcy Daniher FS 6 |
1994 | 103.8 | - |
Overview
- Somewhat expected
- I have not adjusted these figures to account for 2016. I don’t believe it would have a material effect on averages since the majority of players either retired, were delisted or switched clubs that year.

I may have also put together other stuff, including Collingwood and Richmond figures, I’ll format and post it if it’s wanted.
IF YOU SPOT AN ERROR, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. PM or POST
Dodo’s final nail into his legacy coffin will be having overseen the selection of Tsatas ahead of Phillipou. And how the fark is his puppet RFK still in a job? It was complete negligence to burn a top 5 pick on a player that old John on his couch could see had fundamental flaws in his kicking just from viewing a 3 minute clip. Whilst Phillipou has all the attributes our list needed as a tall physical mid/fwd with immense upside as the youngest player in draft. Absolute amateur hour.
I absolutes wanted Phillipou and can’t stand Dodoro but reckon Tsatas will be a very good player and hoping he has a great career with us
Everyone has tsatas ahead of Philippou and still do. I hope you are being sarcastic
Pou is 100% in that St Kilda side. They have no concerns about whether he’ll make it. We’re still hoping Tsatas turns out okay.
And Pou is in that st kilda side as they actually needed a med fwd/mid type way more than we did given already had Stringer, Langford & Perkins
Also why we probably didn’t go Humphrey
If we really had dropped the ball on Philippou one of the other clubs immediately after us but they didn’t, he slid down to Saints
Brad Scott would have had a strong influence also and was all over Tsatas for our future midfield,as the type who can break lines and weave in and out of traffic, esp given Shiel as essentially our only dynamic mid at the end of his career
Tsatas is a very much a Brad Scott pick - believes he is the perfect prototype for the modern game.
The coach was very influential in this decision.

Everyone has tsatas ahead of Philippou and still do. I hope you are being sarcastic
The only people that think that is Essendon people and most of that belief is driven by hope.
Are you serious? The only people that had Philipou ahead of Tsatas are Essendon people, and most of that is driven by hate
