i want dodoro gone as well, but that first question is pretty hard to answer when youre just having a quick and off the cuff conversation. to try and explain the last 20 tumultuous years would take you a fair while.
the fact that he says we should be contending in 2 years is a pretty solid little gem of information. but weve been told that were 2-3 years away for like +10 years now
I agree, the first question if difficult to answer, and it comes down to a multitude of factors but I donât buy the second answer. I remember chatting to Jason Johnson at the B&F in 2018 and he also told me we were 2 years away. Just goes to show that we have just as much an idea as so called, âexpertsâ.
I agree, time for change. My bro seems to think Dodo is pretty checked out at this point. The only reason I bring this scenario it up is because my bro doesnât speak about the club openly too often unless asked. To receive a call from him and hear his disappointment did surprise me.
If we somehow we pull off a top 4, I will admit that I didnât believe that this list was good enough to get there.
But thatâs also not my criticism of Dodoro - my criticism is that he hasnât put together a list that can compete in finals games. That is from a physical and mental perspective.
The analysis of a list is about more technical than âthe list is sh*t: the list is greatâ.
I donât believe we have a list who can compete to the high contested riggers of a finals serious.
But also are you willing to acknowledge that if we make the finals, and continue to lose finalsâŚ. That Dodoro isnât good enough?
I agree we are always told two years, but you donât need the club to tell you that it is actually would be approx 2 years based on the list age demographic.
You canât hit the draft(s) hard like we have in the last 3 years and then expect to rise in that time.
Once those guys get to 22/23 years old and the rest of the list is in their prime then thatâs when you can hope to contend, which will be in 2 to 3 years.
If you write down a best 22 for 2025 with their ages next to them and hope that Cox, Reid Jones, Hayes project to be very good players based on draft position then you will see it will be a very strong list demographic at that point. The unknown is WILL those players turn into the players weâd hoped they would become
Of course he wouldnât divulge anything too in-depth to a random at the airport. Just found it interesting because of the way my brother described his demeanor. For the list manager to simply throw up his hands and say weâll be good as long as no one leaves, is in a round about way saying; Iâve recruited well and not my problem if we donât progress.
Over the past 3 years we took 5 first round pivks(above average) and 1 second round pick (below average), so overall 6 picks accross the first two rounds which is bang on the average. I wouldnât consider that hitting the draft hard.
You are just looking at just national drafts there is more:
5 top 13 picks in last 3 drafts (Cox, Perkins, Reid, Hobbs and Tsatas)
3 picks between 20 and 40 (Jones, Bryan, Hayes all talls which take more time)
2 mid season picks (Menzie, and Mass all under 21)
SSP picks (Durham, Martin, Tex, Baldwin all under 21)
Rookie draft and later picks that look promising (Voss, Davey)
Trade in a under 22 player in Caldwell
No trades made for mature players using first round picks in that time
That is bringing in a lot of young talent in a short space of time. That is a big investment in young talent
Iâve got no problems with players leaving. You make a trade, get compensation back and then use that to replace the loss. Saying that weâll be good in two years if nobody leaves is a cop out. â â â â happens. The job of the list manager is to overcome those challenges.
I do think our list is on average the strongest it has been in quite a while. Normally at this time of year itâs reasonably easy to do a shortlist of the players who wonât get a new contract. Some tough calls will be made, or players traded out or pushed to retire. Scott will be making decisions to move players on after 12 months of getting to know the list. I expect some unexpected cuts or trades.
As for the timeline, two years is pretty fair for the 3rd youngest side in the comp. Itâs fine to use that to drive your list build strategy, but the risk is if doing the job badly you can use it as an excuse for poor performance. The timeline is fine, what we do with that time is critically important.
i cannot understand how a list manager of 20 years thinks that it would be acceptable that the whole club would push back its expectations of success by a few years every time a player leaves. its absolutely moronic. if Parish leaves, is he going to say that were 5-6 years away?
