Dodoro’s attitude going in to the 2020 draft says it all.
Yep, spot on - can I give you his mobile so you can shut him up for me? Norf fans…
What was his attitude? I don’t remember
Had a meeting with his crew pre-draft and was taking Brand and Eyre no matter what, no plan B no plan C and we end up with 4 out of 5 selections over 198.
That draft there showed that he has no idea how to balance a list.
The following table represents total players recruited and games played by each club from 1999 onwards.
Team | Players IN | ≤10 Games | 100-199 Games | ≥200 Games |
---|---|---|---|---|
Essendon | 209 | 91 | 22 | 6 |
Geelong | 200 | 90 | 16 | 17 |
Hawthorn | 218 | 90 | 23 | 12 |
Collingwood | 228 | 97 | 23 | 11 |
Questions
- Does this say more about our recruitment or player development (including injury management)?
Problems and Limitations
- I have excluded players from all teams that were drafted at the end of 2015 to control the 2016 season penalties.
- There are many limitations to this data. Eg I have not labelled priority selections which help collingwood and hawthorn the most
- I have to verify the data entry tomorrow.
- Spot an error? Let me know!
The thing that still absolutely gripes me is that he would pick up these project players and say “theyre going to take time to develop” and within a year or two of drafting them, hes already delisted them. Brand and Eyre were clearly not up for it. Both bid on by the Dogs and the Tigers. At least those clubs would’ve given them a better shot at making a career for themselves. Same goes for Munkara. A major long term project who wasnt expected to play VFL this year. kid exceeds expectations and starts making a genuine impact on games… and then hes delisted. Just horrifically poor foresight for a list manager whose job it is to have foresight. So many wasted list spots over so many years.
I think it’s something he learnt from sheeds
Saga players also penalised 20 odd games too due to suspension
We are still short on key position players though.
I first met Matty Guy just after he was elected to office in 2006, when he came to talk to Councillors about local planning issues. He was seriously impressive and was eager to push his views on strengthening communities and better planning laws. Eager and very believable, and more than a bit like some footy recruits who show you flashes of brilliance, and get you excited by the prospect.
So I do understand completely what your friend was thinking.
As it turned out, the practice match form never developed into the real deal, which left me surprised and disappointed.
We have a good supply of short key position players, though.
Sounds perfect for the midfield.
I think of it as through a combination of bad recruiting, bad luck and consistent mid table mediocrity, we haven’t recruited enough A grade players to the club with our high picks.
And your data shows that pretty well. We’ve got a lot of 100 to 199 game players, but haven’t recruited enough champion 200+ game players
We have drafted a lot of the McGrath, Monfries, Melksham and Myers types with high picks. They’re fine AFL players, but not the difference makers you need to recruit with your first rounders to jump into contention
It’s because we’ve had precious few top 4 picks during disco’s tenure. Only 2. Would be interesting to compare that stat to other clubs
I posted a while ago that since 2017 we have had the 4th least amount of wins. Yet we have only had one top 7 pick in the draft.
We’ve also had the least number of top 30 picks of any club. Even less than Geelong!
Just continual mid table mediocrity and some poor list management (and some bad luck)
We better go to the AFL and whine about needing help.
Francis in his under 18 year was a gun.
could play midfield, forward or defence for SA.
highlights from champs looks like he could have became a inside mid or handy half back reading the play.
To be honest…there is nothing particularly exciting about those highlights at all. He looks the same player we got at Essendon.
Missed targets by foot. Made poor decisions. Not particularly fast. Decent overhead. A little bit hot headed and undisciplined.
Sums up our recruiting. We’ve also drafted on potential not reality. If Aaron was a better player then he could be a better player
“We think they/he can play midfield one day” rather than “he’s currently one of the best midfielders in his age group”
Can someone post this?
He literally just said that it’s not his last trade period.
It came across as he’ll still be running the joint for future years to come.
