I think it was a good opportunity to welcome someone back into the club that only left due to personal tragedy.
While we seek hyper-professionalism at all times, there are not lives at stake here. The club getting Merv back was good thing, it just showed a bit of love when the club has seemed to be quite toxic of late.
Also, he can do the job, and clearly believes he can still do the job. Tbh if I heard he approached the club and the club said no to get someone else, given what made him leave, I would have been dissapointed.
As fans, we demand the world, but in the end we just get the joy of wins or the frustration of losses but life goes on, we go to our jobs and families. For Merv, there might be a bit more to it.
In the end, itâs just footy. On this one, happy to skip the process. I think the clubs interests and the persons interests aligned.
Vast majority of them are unassuming simple passionate fans like us. They go with their wives, take their grandchildren as well. Just normal fans in most cases. Yes theyâre in most cases reasonably wealthy on average basis.A few seek access and throw their ego around but vast majority just enjoy contributing financially, enjoying a day at the footy in style, hearing from a guest speaker or three and hoping for a win.
98% of them donât and donât chase it. Itâs the vocal 2% that get the headlines and create a misleading narrative of âinfluenceâ. Truth be known, every club has them.
Agreed and most are unassuming just want success , have meet several of them- Iâm referring to those that seek influence within the club and throw a tantrum when they donât get what they want- cut these ones loose
this is my view too.
someone from within the system who didnât change it or leave, when they realised their reputation and value as a recruitment person was being tainted by the EFC process, is not going to magically make better decisions now that dodo is finally getting some heat.
heâd only have the essendon way, the dodo way as a reference point to know what to do and what to look for.
go and search for someone that has to had results to keep their job, and not back room handshakes dodgy dealings as the only source of employment power.
just in case anyone at the club monitors here for supporter sentiment, I cant let this topic go 3 days without comment, so hereâs me saying get rid of the fraud.
So if we had to rattle tins to save the club the rank and file would have walked away? Of course not. Itâs a cop out. The debt actually wasnât even that high for a club with such strong revenue streams. There is no way we should be beholden to the well heeled supporters, especially if they are forcing an incompetent list manager on club
Its pretty easy to get a copy of the club financial reports & you can see that the majority of the clubs revenue comes form memberships, sponsorships, pokies & from the AFL. Coterie members donât simply hand over bags of cash (outside of Carlton) or deposit millions into our accounts. Weâre not a charity - its not tax deductible. What they do do is pay high prices to attend functions & club events that are out of reach to most other supporters. The club would survive infinitely better if the coteries got out of the way & the club won a flag (if they are in any way hindering progress). Richmond for example went past us in 2018 & now average 20-30M more in revenue than we do. Thats not because they have richer coteries, its because regular supporters drive up memberships & ratings which drives up sponsorships & merchandising. We should not ever imagine that coteries deserve any influence over how the club is run & certainly should not be protecting one of their own when heâs doing a bad job.
