Fixed

i didn't know ad's wife and kids go for essendon until that tweet from the afl just before. i can't believe none of them stabbed him in his sleep.

I think its amazing that Demetriou still doesn't think hes an idiot.

Drawn up a shortlist of his replacements and their track records:

Brian Cook - former CEO of West Coast, current CEO of Geelong. Been great for both clubs, growing them as off-field and on-field success stories.

Brendon Gale - former head of the AFLPA, current CEO of Richmond. The players received the best possible wages and working conditions under Gale's tenure and he is doing a pretty fair job managing the grand expectations of the Tiger faithful, growing memberships incredibly well.

Gary Pert - as a former Fitzroy player, he understands the struggle for clubs to survive. As CEO at Collingwood he has overseen the creation of nearly 80000 members...with eyes of hitting 100000.

You should send it in to them, save them some time.

I believe that the next CEO (or at the very least his deputy) MUST be from outside the AFL.

Remember the phrase fish rots from the head?

Was in the car when the announcement was made so haven't seen the presser. Not sure that I want to as the small amount I did hear made me nauseous. Thought all that back patting might cause injuries if it continued. Can someone tell me in what context he made the statement about not injecting anybody, and what was the reaction of the press to this (I'm assuming) smart ■■■■ comment? Thanks in advance.

The first time he was being pushed by an ABC journo about whether he regretted the handling of the saga last year or such. He said the statement then, it had his desired effect amongst the compliant media.

The only problem with that theory is the lack of football knowledge and football administration. Do we really need someone there with training wheels?

If Brendon Gale gets the job I will happily give the game away.

oh don't even suggest it..

Which is pretty much a "don't blame me, whatever you do!  I didn't inject anyone!"

I thought he was asked if he was responsible for it and he answered accordingly. The question wasn't worded correctly and he pounced.

So....Hird, Evans, Bomber, Corcoran, Robonson all copped it, because they injected people?

I, for one, am not going to be dancing on this grave.

I firmly believe that Demetriou had the best interests of the AFL, Essendon and the players when he and Evans settled on their strategy for handling this.  I believe that they executed the best possible strategy but were relying on ■■■■■■ intelligence from the ACC and ASADA.

The strategy ■■■■■■ up because the intelligence was wrong and then everyone was backed into a corner, which is when things turned nasty. The former Labor government's grandstanding "blackest day in sport" press conference that is the root cause of the problem.  On the basis of that ■■■■■■ intelligence they went early and we've lost a number of great people to the game.

Demetriou ■■■■■■ up on tanking, he ■■■■■■ up the handling of the supplements saga and I firmly disagree with his approach on equalisation. But he also did some good things for the code and I think he leaves it in a better position than it was when he took over.

No doubt you are right on the detail. I found his passing the buck, by slinging dirt at someone else (who remained unspecified), so boring and predictable that my concentration lapsed. I guess he feels the nurse, who did the injecting, while being paid less than a twentieth of his salary is responsible. Clearly he's not responsible for anything. Not sure why they pay him a cool 2mil a year, but it's not for being responsible for something, that is clear.

So even now as he announces his departure he is doing his best to imply guilt. An approach he should never have taken, ever. Never was his place to apportion blame and as CEO of the AFL, it is STILL not. How different things would have been if he had kept his mouth shut until the investigation was over.

Are you suggesting AD was more responsible for what happened than those mentioned? I will support the EFC regardless of the outcome, but do I think we fkd up monumentally and do I think those mentioned above should accept some responsibility and accountability? Yes, I do.
AD is a ■■■■ and his handling of this saga has been terrible. However, legal or illegal what went on at the EFC was a Fkn disgrace. Period.

What chance our old mate Peter Jackson has already spoken to someone somewhere about the job?

Depends how you view things. The game seems now to belong to the AFL, not to the clubs and their supporters. I am also concerned that there is a lot of window dressing around things like integrity and less substance than you would expect from a "people's" organisation. I think the boys club is well and truly thriving and things like the "egalitarian" nature of the game are challenged by the costs and timing of games, pay tv deals etc making them less affordable and accessible. I noticed that Fitzpatrick struggled with the word "egalitarian" so I'm guessing it is not one he uses often. Put simply, AD and co view footy as industry. It pays them handsomely. It feeds a multitude of hangers on as well. I view footy first as sport with the players at the heart, not as cogs in the wheels or part of the property of AFL.

Given "what went on at the EFC was a Fkn disgrace" I guess the AFL didn't need to gag Hird who still hasn't been permitted to tell his side of the story. I guess the AFL didn't need to conduct a trial by media witch hunt and selectively leak partial evidence to cast what happened at EFC in the worst possible light. All they needed to do was follow due process and then everyone would come to see that "what went on at the EFC was a Fkn disgrace".
