AFL may soften rules. Top-ups freely available?

This is great news, hopefully this makes picking up Dea is a formality.

Very interesting that John Worsfold gives an indication that James Kelly in on the radar and now this, I was thinking there was no way that he would put himself on the table to potentially go anywhere in the country, so it seemed like it would never happen.

But now that Kelly has a say, that could make all the difference.

FREE PLAYERS HAWTHORN.

I like how they use AFL.com communication specialists to test the water before they announce yet another on-the-run policy decision.

I think Kelly may have had an impact on this. There is no way the AFLPA would have wanted a person of his stature in the game having to use the draft lottery to decide his career.
It may be even more direct than that. The article says this has been pushed by the AFLPA. How many of the guys who run that are friends of Kelly, Stokes, Crowley etc.?

So that means no need to keep ashby Dempsey now with a guaranteed dea

One thought on all this, how can a club relist its own delisted free agents?

I suppose Essendon were given no choice but to delist the top ups, but doesn’t this create a weird precedent of its own?

That’s so afl.

Boomer will get picked up by North after he’s delisted.

Actually, I think this could always happen. So a player is delisted, the club goes to the draft, doesn’t like what’s left, picks them back up.

But this re-listing avoids the draft. It probably doesnt create much of an issue, but it seems to me to be another anomaly courtesy of the over worked afl anomaly department.

I meant picks them back up after the draft as a DFA.

I know who should be picking him up.

You get the feeling that the AFL would like us back in town ASAP, but it’s just so contrived.

Boomer will get picked up by North after he's delisted.

They should put him on the rookie list.

I think that under the logical application of the actual rules, we signed the top ups as delisted free agents to one year contracts, so for us to continue with a player it is really just re-contracting that player.

Remember there were restrictions on who we could have as top ups. They had to be recently out of the game, therefore I think this means they were effectively delisted free agents that everyone else had overlooked through the DFA period and drafts. No other club can really complain, because they has their chance to recruit the players last year if they wanted them.

The AFL haven’t done this to help Essendon.

Exactly, this has come at the request from the AFLPA, you pick your battles, AFL decided to hand this one to the players. The AFL are seen to be doing something the players want but really this decision means nothing to them, effects what 2 player at the most, "your win this time AFLPA" they maybe won't be so friendly next time it involves something they actually care about.

Might as well call it the “Kelly” ruling, even though Dea will probably be the only player that is applicable.

I highly doubt the AFLPA wanted one of their elder statesman having to go through a national draft…

Now confirmed.

Matty Dea is the only player that this will effect, Kelly has been really good for us this year but with all our returning players I can’t find a spot for him in our best 22

What about Jamar?
Is he any chance to replace Mckernan if only for 1 year while also coaching? Would only play 1s when/if both Lewy and Bellchambers fall over.
