New rules and a new field will be used in an effort to bring more fans to footy, here’s everything you need to know about AFLX 2018.
What are the rules?
-
The games will be played on rectangular fields, 100-120m x 60-70m in size. This allows AFLX to be played in stadiums configured for soccer or rugby.
-
Seven players on the field per side with three substitutes. Teams can make as many interchanges as they like. Two players must start in both the defensive and forward 40m arcs, while three start in the middle third of the pitch.
-
2 x 10 minute halves with no time on.
-
10 points for a supergoal kicked from outside the 40m arc.
-
Last touch out of bounds = free kick against.
-
All scores result in a kick-in.
-
All teams will be broken up into three events, battling it out in a pre-pre-season showcase at various venues around the country.
Hindmarsh Stadium and Allianz Stadium will host the new format in Adelaide and Sydney respectively.

How to watch
Go to the games!
Tickets are cheap as chips, with adults being hit for $15, concession $10, and kids under 12 getting in free.
The AFL is promising a day of fun for the whole family, with Big Bash-like entertainment and non-stop action.
Fans can expect "fireworks, music DJs, in-game commentary, roving performers, kids and family zones and giveaways." **
If you can’t get to the games, AFLX will be broadcast nationally live on the Seven Network - check your local guides as to whether it will be on 7, 7two or 7mate.
The games will also be simulcast on Fox Footy, as well as live streamed on the AFL Live app.
Who will be playing?
As yet the games are currently just an exhibition with nothing but a bit of pride on the line, so don’t expect teams to go risking all their superstars or blokes carrying injuries.
The fast-paced nature of the game should lend itself to smaller blokes, though the wide open spaces might see more one-on-one duels to give the key position players an advantage.
Squads are yet to be announced but we will be sure to see plenty of youngsters and fringe players getting a run.
