The AFL is set to name Andrew Dillon as it’s new CEO by the end of next week. Dillon, currently the AFL’s Executive General Manager of Football Operations, Legal Integrity and General Counsel has won the role Fox Sports has learned despite a late push from AFL Chairman Richard Goyder for Western Bulldogs President Kylie Watson-Wheeler.
A source close to the AFL Commission has suggested they were split 4-3 and pressuring from several AFL Club Presidents for Dillon has been enough to sway Goyder.
It has also been strongly suggested that current Richmond CEO Brendon Gale, who was a strong candidate for the vacant AFL CEO role, will be now earmarked to take over Dillon’s role of Football Operations supremo.
In other AFL administrative moves, one-time AFL CEO candidate Travis Auld, currently AFL CFO and GM Broadcasting and Clubs is set to be appointed the new CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and AFL GM of Operations David Stevenson will be appointed the new CEO of the National Basketball League.
Dillon is pretty impressive in interviews I’ve heard him in. Also the fact he doesn’t seek the limelight is probably a good thing, but i think to balance it out you’d need an outspoken chairman, something goyder is absolutely useless at.
Every time I’ve heard him he’s sounded like a nervous wreck and fumbles over his words quite a bit. To be fair though that was years ago so perhaps he’s cleaned up his public speaking ability.
Unethical behaviour as the legal counsel and integrity employee of the AFL during the Saga.
He issued charges against Hird, Reid, Thompson and Corcoran for a number of WADA prohibited drugs without any factual basis. He issued them in a blaze of publicity and then withdrew them, limiting the charges to TB4
He should have been struck off for lying.
That’s how it works. I can’t believe anyone ever thought that he wouldn’t be the one to get the job. It’s been apparent for some time that he was going to be handed over the job. I don’t think too highly of the bloke but could see this appointment coming from a mile back
Yeah he is nervous, but gill was absolutely hopeless early days in interviews. Have a listen to this interview below, the bloke is super switched on and knows every department of the AFL operation back to front. Also the clubs reportedly rallied around on the weekend to ensure Dillon was the choice, after it was revealed Kylie Watson Wheeler was favoured.
Anyhow it was obvious Dillon was the preferred choice, why else would Gill stick around to get all the big ticket/controversial items ticked off before the new CEO came in? He couldn’t care less doing that for Gale, only for a mate like Dillon would he bother going through all the crap like the hawks investigation. He obviously didn’t want to hand him a poison chalice.
I was actually hoping the AFL could convince Peter Malinaskaus to take the gig, he would be perfect.
