AFL - Terrible Ideas, Too Many Ideas, No Idea…

Should people use “i.e.” when they really mean “e.g.”?

In terms of post-incident management, yes, but what can their advanced medical teams do to prevent the incidents on field? I would have thought AFL players are probably more at risk given they generally train more often, move faster, have more mass, and play with more desperation than those at the lower leagues.

They aren’t sure, hence why they are trialling it. There is no way they could do the trial at AFL level because of the potential impact on performance.

Cricket said the same thing 40 years ago and now kids are so in line with the expectation they literally won’t face one ball without their helmet on. Feelings change over time.

Isn’t there already players wearing helmets and performing at high levels? Isn’t that enough proof of impact on performance?

A case of looking like you are doing something, without really doing anything. Oh and lining your own pockets.

Pretty sure there are plenty of studies & expert opinions that show helmets do not protect against concussion and in some cases increase the risk, as players think they are more invincible, so go harder.

And the NFL is a good case, have been wearing helmets a long time, but still have major issues with CTE.

It doesn’t really feel like the start of the footy season does it.

Zero vibe and it’s too warm. And just out of rhythm.

No, more as in I think bugger all players would voluntarily wear them because they are used to playing without them.

It’s a bit easier in lower levels (especially community) to get participants for this to work. A lot more people to start, and you can put an incentive to partake in the trial.

Yeah that makes some sense. I still think the AFL is doing it all for sure and not to really protect players. But that is probably my cynical side.

Hey it’s going to be going off* tonight at the G#!

*may depend on how many beers I have pregame
#G as in the SCG

yeah they really cocked up this opening round BS.

Feels like a Lightning Premiership. Cant really even be arsed watching tonight, when normally i’d be gagging for the first match.

Person is charged with murder. Apparently is son of a former AFL player, so cannot be named. What. Did the AFL submit that it would bring the game into disrepute?

I wouldn’t worry. The AFL has just “leaked” a scrapped idea to the media to create some interest because they’ve completely botched the opening round with it being all interstate. They need something to get the victorians attention

I’m all for it as long as Victoria gets a public holiday for all three.

Also, of course, two of those 17 flags weren’t won in Victoria (2020 and 2021), and they cut off at the weird number of 17 flags because the six flags before that were won by interstate teams (2001-2006).

I doubt this happens anytime soon.
Players won’t want to play an extra two games in a year without being compensated.
AFL will not reduce the season by two rounds as even 2 extra ‘Grand Final’ games doesn’t amount to two standard round fixtures (revenue & broadcasting).
AFL will struggle to fit the extra two games without getting in the way of cricket.

Sounds like pie in the sky stuff.

Doesnt matter if no one wants it, if suits AFL back slappers, then they will entertain it. They have no respect for the history of the game, they have a new rule, social agenda every week so wouldnt surprise me if this got some oxygen too

Right now grand final day is an event

3 play off games? I’m not planning my weekends around that
