so wait, the problem that they resolved (pre finals bye) is now a problem again because of their own actions (wildcards)

wtf just noticed the 7.30pm sunday night game, who thought that timeslot was good?

Channel 7 asked for it and it’s a bit of a trial as potentially Sunday nights will become permanent. Think it a double header with AFLW too

Right now, a good timeslot is one which makes it as difficult as possible to watch the game.

It’s no different to Thursday night? If anything a little easier for most.

they trialed sunday nights some time ago, and it was an abject failure in terms of attendance and ratings

this upcoming nfl game at the mcg is going to be one of the worst things to happen to the afl because of the all the dumb fkass “ideas” it’s going to spawn in mba-addled brains

What right do the AFL have to tell a club which players on their list should be in the team ? Maybe they don’t want to upset gambling companies for games with bets already placed?

I know the AFL wanted a standalone fixture for the AFLW to open the season (even though the season opened on Sunday) but to spend a fair part of time in trying to think of ways to hobble the NRL with gimmicks like Round zero etc to concede Thursday night prime time to a a top of the table NRL clash so a couple of thousand people can attend the AFLW “opener” is just a bizarre business move.

not really

afl isn’t loosing any short, medium or long term market share or ad spend or revenue or whatever to the nrl because of one thursday night in august

one-off scheduling changes don’t alter consumer habits anyway the only thing the afl does that has any risk at all of putting a noticeable dent in the nrl’s profile is auskick.

Probably not long term but I wouldn’t mind seeing the ratings last night. Plenty of the footy heads I know over here watched the NRL last night and at my local footy club after training they had the NRL on TV which is a rarity and then a few us stopped in at the pub on the way home and they had the NRL on too in the Sportsbar.

i assume they’ll all keep watching the nrl instead of afl then

Not a bad point actually. I do think the W season needs some promotion that it’s starting and there’s no better way than putting their one game of the year on 7s main channel, at least in Vic and SA. But maybe they could have done it on a Wednesday night? Or had it as a double header with the legends game, as both have short running time.

The AFL are thrashing the NRL on Thursday and Friday night ratings this year anyway 14-6 on Thursday nights and 19-4 on Friday nights. Don’t believe all the nonsense from the Sydney media machine that the NRL rates higher, they are not even winning head to head on the big primetime nights for average ratings, which is advantageous metric to their shorter running time sport. If you went off ‘reach’ numbers meaning people that actually tune in, the difference is even bigger. Plus across the year 40% less NRL content is consumed than AFL. They are masters in promoting their sport though the AFL are left for dead in the propoganda space.

The AFL does rate poorly on Sunday afternoons this year though for some reason, I think a lot of poor games.

So with the Wild Card and top 10 the AFL wanted teams to be involved for longer.

Well with 1 round to play the top 10 is decided. With Geelong playing Richmond the top 6 is effectively decided.

If we didn’t have a top 10 and we still had the top 8 it would be a cracking last round with both the Dogs and the Pies in contention. The Pies play Brisbane, and if they lost the Dogs would need to beat Melbourne to make it.

Haven’t paid enough attention. Who plays who in the wildcard round?

Is it 8th plays 9th and the winner goes through?

7th plays 10th, 8th plays 9th

8th v 9th
7th v 10th

Highest ranked winner plays 6th
Lowest ranked winner plays 5th

Oh wow

So you don’t automatically qualify even if you come 7th?

Not a big fan of that tbh

On rule changes, why did someone decide that the Ollie Dempsey over-the-head handball should be legal. Why would you do that? It’s a straight throw.
