AFL grants Bombers unprecedented mid-season draft assistance
The Australian Football League has confirmed it will provide the Essendon Football Club with special assistance ahead of this year’s Mid-Season Rookie Draft, awarding the Bombers the first three selections and also increasing their list size accordingly.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the AFL said the decision was made following a review of Essendon’s list profile, results over the past 12 months and long-term outlook.
“A combination of sustained poor on field performance and the club’s current list demographic has created a unique set of challenges,” the AFL said. “This measure is designed to support Essendon’s list regeneration in a targeted and immediate way.”
The ruling marks the first time a club has been granted multiple priority selections within the mid-season intake, underlining the league’s view that intervention was warranted.
Essendon’s list management team is expected to use the picks to target a mix of ready-made depth and longer-term prospects, with a key defender and midfield support understood to be priorities.
Bombers coach Brad Scott welcomed the decision, saying it provided the club with a valuable opportunity to accelerate its reset.
“It gives us flexibility,” Scott said. “We’ve been really clear about building a list that can compete sustainably, and this allows us to bring in players who can contribute now while still fitting our longer-term plans.”
Rival clubs are expected to raise questions around the precedent set by the decision, particularly given the traditionally limited scope of the mid-season draft. However, AFL football operations boss Greg Swann said the league was comfortable with the move.
“We assess each club’s situation independently,” Swann said. “This is about maintaining competition balance while ensuring clubs have the tools to remain competitive.”
The Mid-Season Rookie Draft is scheduled for 29 May, with Essendon now holding the strongest hand in what shapes as a pivotal intake for the club’s next phase.
