AFLW - game 6 vs Swans @ EJ WHITTEN, 7:15pm WEDNESDAY 2 October 2024

Also, Amy Gaylor is now flat out my favourite Essendon player.

Mens, womens, whoever.
Gaylor is a proper footballer.

Why canā€™t they get to a 17 game season? Start it a bit earlier? Or run it a bit later?

Iā€™m not 100% sure but I believe that there are criteria that have to be met before the AFL extends the season.

Attendance numbers is oneā€¦the figure of 4000 average crowd springs to mind (but again, Iā€™m not sure if thatā€™s accurate)

My ears hearing the girls sing the song

Just found this:

NEW AFLW boss Emma Moore says the competition can build the momentum needed to thrive and hit its own metrics for further season expansion.

The 2024 season starts during next weekā€™s AFL pre-finals bye, beginning with Sydney hosting Collingwood at North Sydney Oval on Friday night.

The 18-team competition, which is now 11 games plus finals, is due to expand to 12 regular-season rounds by 2025, and potentially 14 during the five-year deal signed last September.

But the latter expansion is dependent on achievement of key audience metrics (average attendance of 6000 fans, average broadcast viewers of 100,000).

AFLW confident of more growth as new season looms

Not even good Footscray.
West Footscray.

Money.
The comp isnā€™t self sustainable yet. And thatā€™s when the menā€™s comp is not interfering as much.

They will add more games next year and begin the season earlier as per the ā€˜players associationā€™ agreement.
But itā€™s going to be a logistical nightmare if clubs have 4 games to manage on a weekend. Even worse if itā€™s in different parts of the country. Iā€™m not sure if they can do a VFLW / VFL / AFLW back to back to back game.
Doing an AFLW / AFL back to back game will not add money financially unless there is enough of a gap to get people in and out of both games. In the past, the earlier game is a ā€˜freebieā€™ which wonā€™t suit AFLW at all.

Games I attend - 0 wins, 2 losses
Games I donā€™t attend - 3 wins, 1 loss, 1 honey badger hug.

Iā€™m cursed.

Heart doesnā€™t need that on a Wednesday night.

Another win though.

Momentum.

There is a limited supply :sunglasses:

Geez they miked the place up well to hide what happens on a Wednesday night at a ground neither team wants to be at.

Gardiner just a casual 35 disposals, 7 clearances, and 6 inside fifties.

  • Paige Scott led the game for boring marks and occasionally remembered to do boring disposals before being caught :white_check_mark:
  • Walker snuck under the radar for me tonightā€¦ admitted the vision from the fence is horrid.
  • Wales the only ruck who tried to ruck. Disgusting umpiring stopped her dominating there (she won our inside fifties due to lack of competition)
  • G wins clearances.
  • vanLoonā€¦ did OK :white_check_mark:
  • Gay/Gaylor/Cain/Prespakis did their thing (Amy slots in fine with that group), and then there were a fair number of passengers.
  • FFS, put Amber on the wing and let her destroy anyone in the league with that pace (and use her long kicking to scare defenders) . I was going nuts when she started that sprint ten metres behind, and she did not disappoint! Gee, on the other handā€¦
  • Adams can perform the forward pocket role much better (especially since Amber doesnā€™t actually play that role).
