AFLW injury news

Leading into our inaugural AFLW clash with Hawthorn on Saturday at Marvel Stadium, thanks to Liberty, we caught up with Head of Medical Services Megan Smith to provide an update on the health of our list.

Georgia Nanscawen
The inaugural AFLW leadership group member, Georgia is progressing well in her ACL rehab, which she injured in the VFLW Grand Final. She is only six weeks post-surgery so she is in the early stages of rehab.

Jorja Borg
Unfortunately, Jorja fractured her foot in the opening quarter of our practice match against Port Adelaide. This is an estimated 12-week injury so we have moved Jorja to our inactive list. Jorja will be in a boot for the next month and we will re-scan before commencing impact training.

Ellyse Gamble
Ellyse received clearance this week to return to games following her ankle reconstruction. It’s exciting for Ellyse to get the clearance and be available for selection for round one.

Sophie Van De Heuvel
Sophie has also been cleared for round one and will be available for selection following her shoulder reconstruction.

Bella Ayre
Bella is currently recovering from a knee injury and from having Covid. She is in the process of re-loading, and we are aiming for her to return for round three.

Eloise Ashley-Cooper
Eloise is currently recovering from a stress fracture, which has ruled her out for the season.

Jordan Zanchetta
Jordan’s running volume and speed are progressing well following an achilles injury. She is slowly building towards full capacity but won’t be available for selection for round one.

Tiny bit of info on Gamble’s recovery in an article posted in her thread, too.

More details here, including estimate of weeks away:

Bella Ayre Knee/H&S protocols 2 weeks
Jordan Zanchetta Achilles 1-2 weeks

FWIW, Zanchetta seems to be moving OK in the training footage from last night.

(Club instagram regularly has lots of video snippets etc; they don’t embed well here so I don’t normally link to it.)

Nanscawen is tracking super well. Inside source (goes by the nickname ‘G’) says it’s all pretty positive. :heartpulse:

FCFC have only Lily Goss 1-2 weeks away (shoulder).

Tamara Luke done a knee?

Got trapped under her in a tackle.

I guess she can say gutknecht to her season, sadly.

More ACLs, including Tamara Luke for the Hawks.

Might get back versus us, might not.

Prediction by some that Port would be the highest-finishing newbie team getting even shakier.

The big question is whether anyone will replace her role of kicking first goal each game.

Ayre has been (at first voluntarily) out of action since early June…

Bella Ayre
Bella has suffered a minor setback, with onset of a groin injury during rehabilitation. She will deload for a few sessions and then recommence loading back to full capacity.

Jorja Borg
Jorja’s recovery from a fractured foot is progressing well. She has one more week left in her moon boot before making the next step in her recovery.

Eloise Ashley-Cooper
Eloise is also recovering well from a stress fracture and will move out of her moon boot this week and start to introduce impact loading over the coming weeks.

After all the “you’re trying to kill your VFLW players” sooking it’s funny the one who sat out the finals is at best 4 and a bit months out…

Bella Ayre Knee 1-3 weeks

Ellyse Gamble

Ellyse suffered a calf strain in the third quarter of our match against the Pies and didn’t return to the field. We will continue to assess the severity of the injury but unfortunately, it’s looking like Ellyse will miss four to six weeks.

Jess Wuetschner

Jess is recovering from a virus which saw her miss the round five clash. She will train fully this week and will be available for selection.

Alex Morcom

Follow Alex’s collision on Friday, she suffered a cut to the eye but returned to the field for the second half and smiled. Alex will train fully this week and be available for selection.

Georgia Nanscawen

Georgia’s rehab from her ACL injury is progressing well and she should be starting to run in the next fortnight.

Mia van Dyke

Mia suffered a shoulder injury last week at training. She will now start rehab to strengthen the joint but will miss an estimated two to three weeks.

Ellyse Gamble

Ellyse is progressing steadily after her calf injury in round five. She has commenced strength work and starting to prepare for impact training. Ellyse is still an estimated three to five weeks away.

Bella Ayre has been a short-term omission since June, doesn’t even get mentioned any more. Not like we need a big defender or anything.

Ellyse Gamble

Ellyse’s calf injury is progressing well and we will look to introduce impact loading this week. She is still an estimated two to four weeks away.

Mia Van Dyke

Mia will start to integrate contact training following her shoulder injury last week. Mia will have to get through training this week to be available for selection.
