From that honey badgering (HTB paid) we get the ball inside fifty and mark.

  • 1 Gough – DNP – knee no longer constrained, but big limp
  • 2 Gee – ummmm, yeah? Sat out the final quarter
  • 3 Bannister – in quality form
  • 4 Prespakis – sat out first quarter; worked her way into the game
  • 5 Nanscawen – mid and FF. A honey-badgering set up the winning goal.
  • 6 Gay – gun
  • 7 Belloni – I’ve seen her play the Pies twice this year. Big-bodied goal-kicking mid. Probable and not-too-distant Gun.
  • 8 Toogood – sat out the first quarter, then demonstrated she was by far the best player on the ground. Her last quarter was largely roaming up the field and winning every contest, and then she calmly slotted the game-winner.
  • 9 Walker – DNP
  • 10 Ridewood – did a couple nice things; a bit more composed than in her VFLW run
  • 11 Sheridan – defender today, was really good. Making up twenty metres to stop a Pie from goaling won us the game (was a 12-point turnaround).
  • 12 Keaney – DNP – pregnant
  • 13 Chambers – DNP – her sole VFLW game in defence earlier this year was great
  • 14 Gamble – urgh. Had a shocker down back (and occasional ruck in the first half)
  • 15 Adams – mostly played forward, kicked the goal to draw us even late. Because she can play all lines I have her as a must-play.
  • 16 Dyke – always a 100% player. We’re going to get smashed in the ruck until Wales comes back.
  • 17 Clarke – DNP
  • 18 Strong – DNP
  • 19 van Dyke – started forward. Better than usual, but if she’s in the 21 we are in trouble.
  • 20 Cain – decent
  • 21 Maclachlan – might have one here! Two goals, also spent some time in defence
  • 22 Radford – DNP
  • 23 Gaylor – not dominant, but you know she’s classy and gritty
  • 24 Alexander – bad early, disappeared (either from my observation or from the ground entirely)
  • 25 MORCS! – :+1:
  • 26 Gladman – played in second half, not prominent
  • 27 van de Heuvel – DNP
  • 28 Busch – you know I give her crap, but no complaints from me today
  • 29 Verbrtugge – not prominent
  • 30 Wales – DNP
  • 32 Brooker – until that one-on-one with five minutes left where she managed to get the ball and shrug the tackle long enough to get it out, from this and earlier VFLW I have seen nothing yet that indicates she should be on the list
  • 33 Murphy – as per her VFLW appearances, meh.
  • 35 Brown – DNP – probably in front of Gamble, and certainly behind Clarke

We were down 2-22 early in the second quarter (albeit two of those goals were gifts) so went 44-18 after that in the last three quarters. Pies popped up for the occasional goal over that time but we were controlling the game.

They were down multiple mids; we were notably down ruck, numerous KPPS, and some utes (vanDeHeuvel, Keaney, Walker).

Goals: Maclachlan 2, Gee Cain Bannister Adams Toogood 1

Yeah, I’m pretty excited to see her play this year. She looks like she’s going to be an A-grade player right off the bat.

Ump utterly extracting the urine not paying 50 to Nanscawen, but it worked out!

Grace has somehow seen Maggie coming from behind her, and placed it so she doesn’t need to break step on the way to goal. Not as good as her kick in VFLW round two to Plummer, but you’re gonna see a lot of special moments from her.

AFL still doesn’t know the game started an hour late  – posted this article after 4 of the 9 games had finished, and ours was about to start.

Then they go out and sook about crowds.

Some clubs do more than the minimum.

(Yes, the images and videos above are direct from EFC, but reflect that we try on game day but never ever step outside of the bubble of people who are already convinced – e.g. it is 13 weeks since they published anything VFLW on our website, and 12 weeks since posting on Twitter. The AFLW crowd today being worse than any of our VFLW crowds tells you people simply didn’t know.)

Collingwood dominated early, with the ball locked in their forward half for 70% of the opening term.

Sabrina Frederick looked threatening early in her full forward role, with defenders unable to stop her strong marking capabilities, however wild winds [yeah nah] wreaked havoc on accuracy before Alana Porter finally found the big sticks, kicking the first of the day.

Essendon’s efforts to exit their defensive 50 were quickly shut down with Collingwood’s midfielders and defenders set up perfectly behind the ball, with off-season recruit Airlie Runnalls key in Collingwood’s intercepting efforts in the centre.

Along with Runnalls, Saturday’s match simulation gave the Magpie Army their first official look of draftees Georgia Knight and Violet Patterson, Irish recruit Kellyann Hogan, as well as the return of defender Annie Lee and forward Kalinda Howarth.

Father-daughter Patterson, the daughter of Stephen, showed her extensive work rate on the wing, while lively small forward Knight had her moment early in front of goal, with teammates rallying to get around her.

Hogan, who arrived in Australia less than two months ago, settled nicely into the game, showing her willingness to throw her body into the competition.

Spending majority of the 2024 season on the inactive list after suffering a knee injury in Round 1 last season, Lee provided plenty of pressure in the backline whilst highlighting her kicking accuracy.

Yet to make her Club debut after spending her first year with the Pies recovering from an ACL injury, Howarth gave the Magpie Army plenty to be excited about, kicking three goals in the simulation and showing she will be another threat up forward for the Collingwood this season.

A new look in the ruck

Imogen Barnett took most of the rucking duties, with Frederick settling forward of the ball.

Dominating in the centre, Barnett showcased not only her aerial contest and stoppage abilities, but her strengths behind the ball, intercepting plenty of Essendon forward entries.

Video of the end of that at Essendon FC AFLW on Instagram: "Bag of tricks = unlimited ⭐️"

Credit to Brooker knowing her role there, bumping the Pie out of contention.

There weren’t enough people in the stand, or premiership points allocated to the game, for Bonnie to do her usual play to the grandstand afterwards.
