AFLW - round 1 vs Freo @ Windy Hill, 3:05pm Saturday 31 August 2024

Based on form in the practice matches/VFLW this year (and Radio 3DJR’s biases) this should be close to the team chosen:

B Gamble Vogt
HB Gay G. Clarke MORCS
C Keaney Walker Cain
HF Bannister Alexander A. Clarke
F Toogood Gough
Foll Wales Nanscawen Prespakis
Bench Jacques Adams Radford
Gaylor Gee

The bench is all smalls. The first four have impressed; Gee = meh.

If we want another tall defender (note I have named Vogt in defence), I hope Brown is available because vanLoon continues to not inspire (plus see the next paragraph).

I’ve dropped Dyke; Gough to be second ruck. She did quite well in that role today, and across the five games I’ve seen of her my opinion is that it is negligent to play her in defence. Think Nic Martin level of negligence.

Injury queries (so banned from listing above):
Williamson
van Dyke
van de Heuvel
Scott
Brown

Available but not named:
Sheridan
Dyke
van Loon
Busch

Why hello fellow W fans!

Myself and some other EWN committee members will be coming to cheer the girls on this Saturday. I’ll be in the Windy Hill Social Club having a beverage from about 2pm if you want to come say hello!

When is Scott likely back?

This article mentions that we’re “sweating on the fitness” of Brown and VDH, soft tissue injuries. Doesn’t mention Scott but the injury section is clearly just a skim through. Potentially 3 fairly major outs to start the season if Scott is in doubt as well

This was the only bit I got out of that article:

Really excited for this one. Will be my first trip down to Windy Hill in a long time.

Geez. Note that 7 weeks aways means 8 of 11 games missed.

Scott is having a “short stint on the sidelines after suffering a navicular injury”.

The pre season AFL(M) goes for too long. It’s about time the real stuff begins.

Looks like the bottom-right access near the school will newly not be open.

Where’s the BLITZ STAND?

Just enter the main stand from its eastern end; the cool kids* should be in the first few rows as you turn around from the stairs.

Kinda where the two purple blobs above meet.

*Radio 3DJR is being a snob and having lunch with a marsupial in the Social Club beforehand.

I support chaos: Freo replaced their captain with someone who won’t play this year.

I was off by one: Dyke instead of Vogt.

Small forward line with Gough being negligently named at half-back.

Headlining the selection are four debutants, Maddison Gay, Bess Keaney, Emily Gough and Amy Gaylor.

Both Gay and Keaney will don the sash for the first time after coming across from Melbourne and Gold Coast respectively.

Gough and Gaylor are to make their AFLW debuts, an exciting moment for both first year players.

Daria Bannister will make her much anticipated return from an ACL injury suffered last season in round seven.

Sophie Van De Heuvel has successfully recovered from a foot injury, with the defender ready to go for the round one clash.

DJR - are you happy with this team? Everything I’ve read/seen so far makes me think with a bit going our way this season could finish top 6? Should take care of freo???

Good thing that City On a Hill guy resigned.

Clarke, Gee, Gaylor.

That sure is a fast half forward line.
