AFLW - round 5 vs Pies @ Punt Road, 11:05am Saturday 30 September 2023

I’d much prefer this game to have been played on the Friday night before the Grand Final.
It would have had a more balanced attendance and would have gotten more eyes on the game.
If they are to keep the AFLW season around this time, then they should have the AFLW GF replay the night before the AFL GF as a marquee game. Try to tie it into the GF parade somehow. Make the Friday a real festival of football.
I’m not sure those two games at IKON are going to draw the crowd they were hoping.

I’ll complain about the details (and I have) but the split looks pretty sensible to me: 1 Thursday, 4 Friday, 1 Saturday near the MCG, 3 Sunday.

Did everyone get denied grandstand access (you don’t get offered it by default, but you can ask for it)?

Capacity 1000 if it’s legit not available?

I havent been to the area in a few months but isnt Punt Road a construction site pretty much?

The AUStadiums map shows at least one imaginary gate, so not sure where “Gate 1” (as listed on the ticket) is.

A bit of a shambles.
I’m not entitled to tickets. Have to wait for onsale tickets.
May have to find a way to sneak some tickets.

On Brunton Avenue side according to this.

For memory, this was near the social club entry. I didn’t think you could get into the ground from here.
Gate 2 is right near where the players carpark is.

The gate 3 shown is direct to Brunton Avenue, and I’m pretty sure that’s not real.

The western gate exists, but I’ve never seen it used. It’s near but not necessarily the same as “gate 1” on the plan.

The northern side in recent years had two access points: primarily through the stand via the chicken manure/media door (not shown), and the chain wire fence in the pocket (gate 2).

(Map above is rotated!)

This is crap.
I have a membership. Should be able to get tickets but aren’t entitled to tickets.
Only way is to purchase them.

Public sale now on! Tickets remain.

Grandstand also not available to the general public.

Did you get the email from the club with your code?

I’m AFL member. Not club member. I’ll have to search again whether there was another code when I last got tickets.

Never mind. Found it.
Don’t get why we can’t use our AFL Membership barcode…

Got tickets.
First chance to get to a game without work getting in the way.

Pies are modest favourites with the bookies.

Their game against the Saints went 34-9 their way in the first 55 minutes, and then 1-38 against them in the closing 25 minutes.

Bri Davey went off with an “innocuous” ankle issue near the end of those 55 minutes. Sat out 10 minutes but came back on to play out the rest of the game (but did bugger-all).

I watched those 10 minutes and the Pies were comfortably in control, with no indication of what was to come.

Nalder was struggling vs Frederick. Sabrina got 5 coach votes, with Bonnici also collecting 4 and Rowe 1.

Key forward Ella Friend influential for the Saints (I’m still scarred by her FF debut, with Dojiok also debuting at CHB, vs our VFLW team). Livingstone repeatedly beaten, but did take one contested pack mark.

Patrikios and Lambert also important as sparks to the run.

I forgot I was meant to be writing about Pie players, because they’re absurdly invisible. Just can’t get the ball. 0-11 for inside fifties in the last quarter.

Pies got a bit lazy getting the ball out of packs, and got pinged multiple times for that in the final quarter. Frees went 9-1 to the Saints in the final quarter (only one was debatable).

Saints did have some goal-to-goal wind in the last quarter… but nowhere near enough to excuse this flop.

@PH_WARFRadio saw the game live and might want to expand on the Pies, including when they weren’t getting smashed.

Name Injury Weeks
Daria Bannister Concussion Test
Amber Clarke Knee Test
Sophie Van De Heuvel Concussion 2
Lily-Rose Williamson Ankle 4-5
Alana Barba Ankle TBC

Barba injury listed as “innocuous”; she dead. Also 22yo, now.

80 photos of a press conference at https://www.afl.com.au/albums/1042773/aflw-2023-media-collingwood-and-essendon-media-opportunity-270923?modal=true&type=gallery&playlistId=1042773&playlistSize=80

They lit the shots with more and brighter lights than on all of the Punt Road towers combined.

Not yet sold out, surprisingly.

Forwards Daria Bannister and Amber Clarke will return to the mix after missing last week’s game through injury.

Midfielder Joanne Doonan has been omitted (!), while Sophie Van De Heuvel will miss after suffering a concussion in the win over Fremantle.
