Saw Oppenheimer this evening. I was a tad concerned that they’d just cover the building of the bomb, and not go into his security issues.
They did cover a smidge of his security issues. The 2014 series Manhattan covered a lot more of the nuts and bolts of the bomb building, and a bit about the spies like Fuchs.
Finished watching Godfather 2. It was very good but also slightly disappointing as I have always heard it talked about as one of the greatest sequels of all time, so my expectations were sky high . Couple of thoughts:
One of the best performances I have seen De Niro give. I thought the whole prequel idea was good in theory but I wasn’t interested to see how he became the “Godfather” ,much like with Darth Vader its better to imagine how he came to power instead of seeing it. It lessened some of the impact of Brando’s performance imo
One of the best performances I’ve seen from Pacino too. Every scene with him talking to people- it had this underlying tension where he could just explode at any moment
Fredo……so so weak. I didn’t think he could get anymore snivelling and weak after watching his dad get assassinated right in front of him in the first one, but he topped it in this one. What thing I did wonder, when Pacino kisses him was that like the “kiss of death”?
Duvall is absolutely amazing in these films. Was the godfather one of his first roles?
Overall I would have preferred a 3 hour movie about Michael as the godfather instead of a prequel/sequel movie.
I preferred Godfather 1 over two. 1 felt like a more complete film overall.
It’s an unpopular opinion but it’s an opinion I tend to share with you. Always preferred part I to part II. I think the father/ son dynamic in part I resonates more with me than the somewhat protracted and confusing plot of part II.
I also tend to agree that I wished they had focused less on Vito growing up, and maybe focus a bit more on the Michael/ Fredo relationship in part II. I never found Michael killing Fred particularly impactful as I never got the impression they had a particularly good relationship to start with. Michael basically tells him he’s on notice at the end of part I when they’re in Vegas speaking with Moe Green.
Ah well. I should read the books at some point too.
Yeah they never seemed super tight. It’s almost like Michael felt sorry for him but didn’t trust him totally so just shipped him off to look after some piddly investment.
Yeah I think they should of focused more on their relationship, especially if you are going to have him organise for Fredo to get whacked- would of had more emotional impact
It’s one book, Godfather part 2 incoporates some elements from it but is basically an original script. The book is pretty schlocky, but an easy read. Puzo’s ‘The Sicilian’ is terrific. Historical fiction, Michael is a minor character in the book during his exile in Sicily.
Saw a movie called Sound Of Freedom tonight. Based on a True story about a government agent who tracks down pedo’s and is trying to rescue a young girl who has been abducted by sex traffickers. Good movie( the kind that you would only watch once), but clearly very dark subject matter- I would not recommend watching if you have kids tbh
the first 15min is incredibly dark and disturbing
Pretty heart wrenching stuff, reckon I cried at least 3-4 times during it.
Jim caviezel plays the agent, he is fantastic in it
Shame it’s been tainted by these nutjobs, not helped by Cavaziel who I loved in The Thin Red Line. Filmmaker is distancing himself but I bet the company is loving the extra qanon/ cooker bums on seats
Tonight…a choice between A Man called Otto or Triangle of Sadness. Anyone have an opinion or preference out of these two!? Quite different movies I imagine!?
Well, last night the Chieftain (Mrs Grenvold) and the Gang were all tucked up in bed pretty early so Otto or Triangle of Sadness got bumped for 65. A quick 90min flick. An ok film, that probably could’ve been so much better on so many levels. Oh well. 5/10. IMDB rating 5.4/10
Have to agree, and the first 3rd was a hammy mess of unnatural dialogue and delivery. Portentous sound design and vibrating vision fx but no visceral sense of foreboding
