At the movies - From the couch

Don’t really care what Tarantino said about Dano.

Any scene with DDL and Dano together in that movie is electric. You can feel the absolute hatred and disdain through the screen that DDL has for him, just as you can feel the self righteousness holier than thou from Dano. It’s the best.

Not going to lie, I’m loving the passionate stances of posters talking about the movies the love or hate

It’s great to have some good discussions in this thread

I recently listened to a podcast episode centred on this movie. How hard it was to get made, who almost took the role that guy pierce got. How they marketed it, and why no studio originally wanted to buy it and show it

Great movie podcast called What went wrong. Highly recommend for any movie fan

Though if you ever listen to the episode about the twilight zone movie- just be warned it’s very depressing stuff

From the Couch veering dangerously into Arthouse Skivvy Wanker thread territory. The collapse of high and low finally arrives at Blitz, only a few decades late.

Disagree. It’s a one-man show with a ridiculous ending.

you still think they had credibility after shakespeare in love?

This was the one

Does anyone even watch Daniel day Lewis stuff any more?

Oh boy how can you not like the ending!!! It’s tremendous, I reckon I can nearly quote the last ten minutes off by heart

Not sure he does much anymore?

I lasted about 10 minutes.

Oh, Brad Pitt. Cool guy. Chewing, looks cool. Talking cool. Just all round cool guy.

The driving scenes weren’t anywhere near as good as I was expecting. And nothing like some of the archival F1 footage for sheer insanity.

Terrible movie

Denzel Washington in Training Day beating Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind was an utter disgrace.

Too many Oscars go to ham acting.

Roberto Benegini for his literal slapstick, three stooges esque performance in Life is Beautiful over Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan or Ed Norton in American History X…..

Denzel is ham from start to finish. Terrible, terrible actor.

Phantom Thread 2017, he’s versatile. Although it sounds like a Star Wars offshoot it is far from that. Anemone, his son’s directing debut last year, have not seen, sounds ordinary

Denzel terrible? Wowee

Yep. Over actor extraordinaire, has a small set of tricks, employs them in every role. Tom Cruise level.

Wow. That belongs in the molten lava hot takes thread

I think he is very very good in training day, but I don’t think it’s his best performance( I think hurricane probably is) . I don’t think Ethan Hawke gets nearly as much credit for his performance in training day

He has charisma, which is probably more important in big US films than anything. And still important on the stagiest of stage plays, but so are genuine expression and depth. I’ll acknowledge that it’s really likely that the majority of his directors probably asked and got the ‘Denzel thing’. He could be a beast with the Bard for all I know.

Screaming, shouting and swearing isn’t acting. Oscar-level acting requires some depth at least.
