Meanwhile down in “well heeled” Goldstein, ( well heeled is somewhat outdated, every one wears sneekers these days ) in the battle of the corflutes, the backstreets are covered in Vote Zoe Daniel signs, while the main roads, most notably among the $4M+ Beach Road mansions with a view, big Tim wilson signs dominate.
Tim himself is quite a diminutive presence actually , but is wearing out the soles of his sneakers knocking on doors during the campaign.
Both he and Zoe have been conspicuously scarce on the ground over the last 3 years, but about 3 weeks ago emerged from their cocoons
Even more inconspicuous is the ALP candidate, who is female, Nildhara Gadani, a strange candidate in a very “WASPY” electorate. I have seen just one ALP corflute. Shame, because the 10% vote count of the ALP in Goldstein is the important number, ALP preferences will decide whether Daniel or Wilson make it to Canberra this time.
Of very passing interest is the Trumpet of Patriots candidate, Vikki Jane Williams, I suppose some but few extreme right wing types might go for the TOP however not too many donkeys vote in Goldstein, but Vikki will get them if they even bother to mark the first box.
My take on this election is there’s been a few key moments that have changed the course of the mood:
First interest rate cut, with promise of more just on horizon biggest factor as this is best solution to people’s #1, #2, #3 issues ‘CoL. thus has been highly influential imo
Dutton dithering on his public service culls points to poor planning and lack of decisiveness as a leader
Trump chaos hurting Dutton as he has been painted as an Aussie Trump (rightly or wrongly)
Dutton hasn’t been clear with messaging and hasn’t really achieved cut through on his points of difference on the key issues
So I think in light of this, if people are unsure of the alternative, they’re likely to stick with the incumbent. Even if dissatisfied with them which I think will be reflected in a continued decline in the major parties primary votes.
This is a prime example of why I’m completely over this campaign. This is a media takeout from last nights debate. It highlights the media interest in these campaigns is about gotcha moments (equals clicks etc) rather than delving into the detail to get a better understanding of each sides agendas.
Yes, most voters don’t care about detail but when this is the grab from MSM then no wonder people are disengaged.
The only debate where policy was actually delved into was the ABC one, and that’s because the moderator was a genuine politics nuff.
David Speers, for however people view him in terms of partisanship, does the work to try understand what is going on. It showed when he moderated the debate.
Yes, in general we are very poorly served by our collective media. I was out to lunch with close friends yesterday. My mate was obsessing over Dan Andrews, still. I blame elements of the media.
The ABC and The Guardian are ‘hate media’ according to the leader of the Opposition who is asking to be made PM right now. There’s a gotcha moment. In the white bread, tepid milk coffee cafes of Orstraya the tables are festooned with Murdoch dunny paper. I guess I’d feel unreasoned hate for plenty of things if I was wiping my mind’s arse with that stuff.
We had lunch with friends yesterday, and one friend was obsessing about Dan Andrews replacing Albo if he loses. I was obsessing over the cost at the Restaurant !
Possibly belongs in the Dumb Questions Amnesty thread, but has any voter ever been swayed by seeing a candidate’s corflute stuck on somebody’s front fence?
I read these two substacks a couple of weeks ago and both seemed to sum up the state of affairs and still seem right, with the second one a bit more lighthearted but interesting comment on Beazley’s campaign against the Rat Farker.
Not my generation if I can go by most people I know, but I reckon there’s still the politically disinterested elderly and boomer cohort who might go a bit ‘well she seems like a nice honest looking person’. Maybe there’s an equivalent millennial/genz reaction, “he’s hot, I’m voting for him”, “she’s brat, also random?”
yeah fair point . they are sprouting even wilder ideas than the greens are , free everything for everyone all the time . the racist edge might see them attract a few coaltion votes so if they are not preferencing that’s another headache for Dutton , who last night leaned in hard on negative anti welcome to country and anti voice sentiments
I’m not in the Goldstein electorate, but I have followed Zoe Daniel ( an unashamed Essendon supporter through the bad Saga years).
She has been active in Parliament representing constituency interests and major policy issues, she has been out and about at events ( including those she has convened) in her electorate.
At a recent talkback, someone claiming to be a Jewish voter in her electorate complained that she had been MIA on Jewish interests, in combatting anti- semitism. Zoe proceeded to reel off a dozen or so events for the Jewish community that she had been involved in.
