Australian Policies -- from December 2023

It was yesterday

There is an extremely frequently posted Simpson’s pic on Blitz of ā€œOld man yelling at cloudsā€ . I wonder if anyone may think that would be appropriate here?

I couldn’t possibly say after getting an even more anodyne post banned recently.

A few journalists are sharing stories that Albanese is happy for Plibersek to take the heat in adverse media reporting of her decisions. Also that some in the Canberra Press Gallery play along with it.

Also it may lower house prices in Victoria, which the people will not be pleased with i have heard.

I’ve said it before, but traditionally the way that the ALP machine handles those of its pollies who have both left-wing views and a significant media profile is to load them up with the most awful ā– ā– ā– ā– -sandwich of cynical right-wing Sussex Street policies imaginable and force them to promote, implement, and defend those policies (through leveraging the traditions/rules of cabinet solidarity and not crossing the floor) and thereby destroy their own credibility and personal popularity.

IMO John Lyons and Patricia Karvelas are two of the best ABC political journalists. Neither of them live in Canberra.
ADD Tingle is one of the best. Curiously, she didn’t vote against Anderson.

Possibly a torch and not the one on the hill in this case

C’mon Jacinta, do what you know is right. Pull it. The pollsters are saying doing so won’t be politically inconvenient. And that’s important!

As I said previously, it needs to be pulled as in any case the project will never, ever be completed. Best to stop the waste now.

Let it go dude

The public wants it and doesn’t care what you think

The public don’t want it. That’s the point. Have a look at their polling. It’s not a ā€˜must have’ project.

That’s why they will pull it, if they do. Because during a cost of living crisis the public don’t want ā€˜nice to have’ projects that result in cuts to public services and increases in their taxes. With more to come…

Let’s see transpires.

They do though

Let’s just see what happens. I reckon the project will be delayed, managed or whatever method they go with that’s politically convenient that means it’s ditched.

I think it’s pretty obvious the government will be forced to divert money away from it in one for or another.

What if I told you $50B not spent on the rail loop doesn’t mean there’s $50B to spend on other things like health and welfare?

It’s about optics sometimes, as much as anything else. The government has a problem with spiralling debt. It’s resulting in higher taxes and cuts to services. The government needs to be seen to be doing something significant and the SRL will be it. It’s a ā€˜nice to have’ project that’s not feasible. And the average punters know it.

I don’t think the ā€˜average punter’ gives this anywhere near as much thought as you do. I do agree though that the syndicated media definitely report they do

Edit: thank you for confirming my second sentence

I think they do, that’s why their polling support has tanked. They’re copping higher taxes and services cuts because they know the state is debt laden and govt has to find ways to pay for these projects… They aren’t that stupid.

Early days when Downer was Foreign Minister, Greg Sheridan wrote a mildly critical article of the Government’s foreign policy. The Canberra equivalent of AFL House suspended him for rough conduct, for 12 weeks, not allowed any access to the Ministerial wing. He went into rehab, which was successful and was allowed back to play after he wrote more complimentary articles. He’s never transgressed since.

Whereas Hawkie would call Rupert or Kerry, and get them sacked.
