Australian Policies -- from October 2024

Well tbf that’s what they said with the fire bombing of the burgatory store and the cops said nothing to see here :person_shrugging:

Why do we get such a hardon for the semantics of “terrorism”.

I’m sure there’s some mechanics that it activated within the law, but we end up arguing about whether or not to use a word.

What do you mean by “people” ?

If you mean Government and Opposition, I reckon they have both been reasonable in the approach. They are never going to satisfy everyone. Government UN actions are correct, as is their condemnation of Hamas.

If you mean people generally, then I think the greater majority of Australians were shocked and appalled by the attack on October 7, and support Israel’s right to exist, but also want the killing of bystanders and other innocent people in Palestine and Lebanon to stop.

If you mean the people protesting on both sides, not sure that we can expect anything different. It is raw and personal for them, and I have great sympathy with them all. There is a very small group trying to make it worse and they need to be dealt with.

The Middle East conflict brings lots of emotions for me, I respect the rights of Israel to defend itself and even for wanting revenge, but I detest the extreme actions they take. Sadly I cannot see any solution to the death and misery, as Hamas, Hezbollah, and their sponsors will not stop until they are all dead.

The police to decide, let me guess🤔

I will go with a ‘complex and complicated incident’…

Fast becoming one of my favourite politicians. If he was in Victoria I’d vote for him

Yep you are just as dead, if it is a terrorist or a nutjob.

Police command are softly softly too…

Pretty sure classifying it as terrorism opens up other ways of handling g it but I’m not certain?

Because they knew it was connected to the tobacco wars in Melbourne - which they later publicly confirmed

On Monday, following a meeting between the AFP and Victoria, police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said confirmed they were now treating it as a likely terrorism incident.

It’s getting to be farce when politics corrupt an investigation.

They ‘knew’ and then later confirmed if? Lol ok chief

They knew it or highly suspected it. I believe the police even said at the time it was not or unlikely to be a hate crime connected to the ME conflict.

Worked out pretty well for them hey

Correct.

It’s the same reason the stabbing of a minister in Sydney either last year or earlier this year was classified as terrorism. It allowed resources to be accessed which otherwise couldn’t.

CSIRO Report, just released.

The question of nuclear in Australia’s electricity sector

In Australia’s transition to net zero emissions, the electricity sector has a major role to play. But does nuclear power have a place in our future grid?

Key points

  • Nuclear power does not currently provide the most cost competitive solution for low emission electricity in Australia.
  • Long development lead times mean nuclear won’t be able to make a significant contribution to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
  • While nuclear technologies have a long operational life, this factor provides no unique cost advantage over shorter-lived technologies.

Here’s why:

  • Nuclear is not economically competitive with solar PV and wind and the total development time in Australia for large or small-scale nuclear is at least 15 years.
  • Small modular reactors (SMRs) are potentially faster to build but are commercially immature at present.
  • The total development lead time needed for nuclear means it cannot play a major role in electricity sector emission abatement, which is more urgent than abatement in other sectors.

The debate is over.

The debate isn’t over. Dutton and co will decry the CSIRO as “woke” and “unbalanced”, and then deliver a report funded by the Minerals Council that says coal should be ramped up until we get nuclear up and running.

Was over before it began, LNP and mining industry just needed to get it in front of the gawping masses, then waste the resources and time of the scientific body they’d love to further disintegrate and privatise.

Disgusting

Sorry to interrupt the twosome, but you’d vote for Minns if he was leader of the Victorian ALP? Would you? Really? Hahaaaaaa
