Oh is he just

It doesn’t matter that he could have killed someone (if not himself).
What’s more important is he helped out a struggling business that has been doing it tough for 18 months because Dictator Dan cannot handle a pandemic.

Did you miss the issue about his level of education and achievements? As I said he doesn’t marry the intelligence he has with anything that constitutes useful.

Hi BBlitzers

Welcome to a special Estimates edition of Labor’s Senate Select(ions) - a wrap of developments from this week’s hearings in Canberra.

We’re getting close to the Federal election and so it was an important opportunity for Labor to hold the Morrison-Joyce Government to account.

And from what we’ve seen this week, it’s clear this is a Government that is allergic to accountability.

In hearing after hearing, Labor Senators were faced with ducking and dodging from Ministers on everything from the cost of Morrison’s deal with Barnaby Joyce over net zero, climate change modelling, the agreement between the Liberals and the Nationals that underpins the Coalition Government itself, and even the hospital capacity modelling that is informing our safe reopening from COVID.

MORRISON’S CLIMATE PLAN JUST A SCAM

The big news this week was Mr Morrison’s long overdue ‘plan’ to achieve net zero emission by 2050. The only problem? There was net zero detail, no change to policies, and no one has seen the modelling, or the deal struck with the Nationals.

But what is certain is that it will be taxpayers who pay the price for political peace with Barnaby Joyce.

For years Morrison and Frydenberg have been making false claims about the costs of acting on climate change. This week, Senator McAllister discovered that in all that time they’ve never asked Treasury to model the actual impacts.

Treasury weren’t the only ones out of the loop. On the day Mr Morrison announced his plan to reach net zero he was armed with a glossy pamphlet. Senator Keneally pressed the Senate Nationals’ Leader Bridget McKenzie on when agreement on that plan had been reached – turns out she’d never even seen it!

It then emerged that the modelling the plan is based on isn’t finished. Just goes to show this is not a plan, it’s a scam.

LABOR TO FIGHT ATTACK ON DEMOCRACY

The Morrison-Joyce Government moved this week to try to undermine Australia’s democracy with a bill requiring voters to produce identification. Let’s be clear – this is all about voter suppression, and it is disgraceful.

People living in remote Indigenous communities, those dealing with homelessness, and those escaping domestic violence are just some examples of those who often don’t have the easy access to ID.

In hearings this week, the Morrison Government denied that this bill was the result of a deal with the far-Right. It’s worth noting, the next morning Pauline Hanson was claiming credit for them.

Labor will fight the Government every step of the way on this.

RORTS AND SLUSH FUNDS - MOST WASTEFUL GOVERNMENT IN HISTORY?

We know that Scott Morrison and his Government love to spend taxpayers’ money like it is Liberal Party money.

The Morrison-Joyce Government has racked up a trillion dollars in debt and deficits as far as the eye can see, yet the Finance Minister could not assure us that the more than $6 billion in rorts funds in the budget are actually in the nation’s interests, not just in the interests of Scott Morrison clinging to power.

Watch Senator Katy Gallagher take Senator Birmingham to task over their spending:

NOT A CENT SPENT FROM $4.7 BILLION DISASTER FUND

Under questioning from Senator Murray Watt, it was revealed the Morrison-Joyce Government has not spent a single cent on disaster resilience or recovery projects from its Emergency Response Fund, which has now grown to $4.7 billion.

The Prime Minister needs to explain to Australians why he has misled communities and failed to safeguard them from the impending disaster season.

See the exchange here:

BONUSES FOR THE BOSS BUT WORKERS FIGHTING PAY FREEZE LABELLED THUGS

AusPost exec Susan Davies doubled her take-home pay last year, to $1.5 million-plus but employees at the AusPost-owned StarTrack endure a two-year wage freeze.

Their industrial action has been labelled “thuggery” by Minister Fletcher. Senator Tony Sheldon put these claims to officials and from the answers, it’s clear this Government is not on the side of workers.

NO ANSWERS ON IMPORTANT REMOTE JOBS SCHEME REFORM

The Morrison-Joyce Government has introduced a major piece of legislation to replace the Community Development Program. The CDP scheme has been bad for remote Aboriginal communities, increasing poverty and social harm. Senator Malarndirri McCarthy asked officials who Minister Ken Wyatt has been meeting over this important bill – the answer? We’ll get back to you…

NATIONALS TREAT MURRAY DARLING PROMISES AS VOLUNTARY

We welcomed new Labor Senator Karen Grogan to Canberra this fortnight and she was straight to work in Estimates hearings, standing up for her home state of South Australia.

We know Mr Morrison’s Deputy Prime Minister has never wanted South Australia to get the 450 gigalitres of water promised under the Murray-Darling Basin plan. The first thing the Nationals did when Barnaby Joyce became leader again was to try and move legislation to scrap it. As this exchange from Karen shows, they’re now claiming the legislative requirement to deliver it is ‘voluntary’.

PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS REMEMBRANCE DAY

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge my Labor colleagues Kristina Keneally, Malarndirri McCarthy and Senator Catryna Bilyk, who all made powerful contributions marking Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. They are helping to shine a light on what is often a hidden tragedy. Labor is committed to driving change in this area, including paid parental leave for those who have lost a child.

I’ll leave you this week with the words of Senator Bilyk:

Thanks for taking the time to read Labor’s Senate Select(ions). I’ll be back with another update from Canberra in November.

Senator Penny Wong
Labor Senate Leader

There may be many different definitions of intelligence, but “level of education” isn’t one of them.
