Anyone who went to University in the 1970s would remember the Mr University contests that revolved around drining lots of beer and eating disgusting amounts of all sorts of things. At Uni Melb, it was always won by a Chemical Engineer, and most famous was the guy who would eat his own vomit.
Free beer and bbq Tuesdays with bands like You Am I and The Meanies playing outside in the early 90’s. Kennett killed all that dead in a year. Walk through the Union outdoor now on a sunny Tuesday and you hear Laurence Fishburne’s immortal line from Event Horizon echoing through the place.
Student associations don’t have money to be giving away free beer…… and there is no way Universities would allow student associations to be giving away alcohol, in this day and age with their healthy eating policies.

Prosh Week had a few interesting contests.
Mate of mine would often stay late at uni and on one occasion, they had a very formative Ol’ 55 out in North Court playing, and on another they were filming the movie Petersen with Jack Thompson and they did the scene there where Jack porked Belinda Giblin for some liberating reason or other.
Pete and Dud did a show there in October '71 on their Behind the Fridge tour, and Wilson Hall was packed to double capacity. They had to take out all the seating to accommodate the crowd. Tickets $1 a pop.
The Union Building is all concession stalls now. It used to be a big cafeteria.
