Australian Politics, Mark II

I know Luke Creasey, and he is a good young bloke.

Yep he was 22 and his posts were to his friends, and many, including me, have made some ordinary posts on FB and elsewhere.

But his posts went too far and he suffers the consequences, probably never to return as a candidate.

The issue for me is that we now have a brand of “journalist” who trolls the web to seek out whatever any candidate has ever posted, just to pillory someone on a past mistake. And we think Caro is bad.

Think they have stopped asking “Who is the PM” after they were asked “Which month do you mean?”

Like I said, … if he, and/or the encharged apparatchiks didn’t think they would do that after it having happened so many times already, then they aint too bright.

That goes for both Major parties here. Each have basically proved themselves not smart enough to run a Car wash let alone a Country, … but inparticular, the Labor crew should be flogged for this.

Being the main enemy is a Media organisation that thought nothing of hacking thousands of phones and listening to peoples private voice messages, … stooping low enough to even hack the one of a missing / presumed murdered child ffs., … this shitt is nothing.

Just elementary basic housekeeping in 2019.

At the presser Morrison confirms that the Lyons candidate lied to him. Next question from a journalist plant is about Labor’s plan to vary the vegemite recipe. After him saying he loves vegemite but Jenny does not presser finishes. No opportunity to ask if the marriage is rocky on that account…

Not sure what to think about the journo sport of rifling through candidate’s social media history. Good filter, for sure. Could easily be exploited and I can see this will only get bigger. I suppose the result will be that people who are serious about making a tilt at politics will be very careful. That will take care of the idiots. Not the paid up goons though.

Do you remember everything you have ever posted ?

If you are on a Nazi site yelling Sig Heil or equivalent on the Left, then maybe it is pertinent, but a poor taste joke amongst friends, turned into something much bigger is PC gone very mad.

Fark me, if facebook etc existed when Paul Keating was younger, what would he have posted about others ? And the danger is that it is taken out of context in nearly every case.

But it also shows that voters have previously voted for these type of people - It’s not like these people suddenly appeared with the advent of social media !

I understand what you are saying but politicians of all generations have had these thoughts - Previously everything was kept in-house - Some reckon politicians are a dying breed - Reckon comedians have worse job prospects.

Geez, there’ll be some back slapping in this thread on May 18 when Bill gets in.
…leaves thread.

The metadata on the leaks to press about these incidents from both sides lead to staffers. It’s not journos, you know they don’t investigate anymore, (water buyback = citizen twitter), it’s good old fashioned dirt units within the parties, strategically releasing the dirt. This noble pollie thing holds no water BF

I am well aware of dirt units in all Parties, but lazy “journalists” reporting this stuff is poor. And I have never subscribed to any “noble pollie” mantra. My view is that Parliaments contain people that are reflective of our society, good and bad, and hence they have the same weaknesses are the rest of us.

I do maintain though that most of us get forgiveness for past sins, and rubbish social media posts of our youth get forgotten; but in the case of politicians and candidates they have another standard to be judged by.

I would say they are the opposite of lazy.

It’s the candidates and those around them that are the lazy ones.

Journalists job. … trawl through thousands of posts on multiple accounts for hours,/days/weeks …= get story. Reporting this stuff is their job.

It’s the Candidate and Vetters job to see they don’t get one, but they’re like… yeah nah… CBF, . or whatever.

I’m struggling to understand how you don’t get this one Comrade, it’s been this way for at least a decade in all Western Countries, but especially where Murfuch has his mitts in the Media, … and if not them. then the dirt unit on the other side.

And if it is the dirt units, it seems, that if they invested their time looking for the dirt on their own folks rather than the others, the problem would be solved, if not, then at least do it as rigorously for both.

The gen pop is more aware of cleaning up this stuff before simply applying for a basic job, … but these mobs don’t bother when they are asking for the approval of thousands for theirs?

Even though they KNOW there are people on the other side, AND Journos who will be seeking it as a matter of course?

Idiots.

Not to mention Losing candidates through Citizenship issues again this time around after what’s just transpired in the past 2 years . . How the hell do any of them STILL let that happen??

I mean FMD, this is like bluddy amateur hour, It just beggars belief!

Parties dont need dirt units.

If your a candidate this election, you would be researching all your opponents. Politics is sadly often a self serving job. Many many candidates are in it for the pig through.

No slight on political parties and the true believers(on either side) … But deep down the candidates are all there for the dollars and fame. I feel sorry a bit for all the volunteers.

Its Hollywood for ugly people.

Dollars and fame ! What a laugh, pay is ■■■■■ and giving up your life is not fame.

Most, even Pauline do it for altruistic reasons.

But what you don’t get young Devil is that most of it is just a minor glitch in a career of community service. Say sorry, but resign ?

A poor post 10 years ago should not define your life.

Well said

Agreed, but as you said, Politicians are held to a higher standard, and for them, it/they (poor post/s) will! …and the rub is, they KNOW that will be the case.

And the solution is so simple and obvious, that it’s amazing the bloke didn’t go and delete his accounts, and / or, vet himself by going back through his online stuff and deleting anything that could even remotely imperil his chances.

Normally you might say, “Well let this be a lesson to young players”, but in this instance, the opposite is true, … a young bloke like him should have known it better than anyone.

To not do that before you even apply to be a Candidate, is difficult to comprehend in the Social Media age.

Even if you delete your accounts your comments still appear on other people accounts (pretty sure). Unless you are a young lib or a union staffer you probably don’t see see yourself as a politician 10-20 years down the track. Your delinquent criminal file is ‘deleted’ but your social media comments are not. Weird world.

Are you saying there’s no way to delete some of them,… at all?

I’m aware some things are a bit more difficult than others, but could have sworn I read there was.

Edit: This is why I don’t FakeBook.

I was under the impression only your page disappeared but a quick check revealed when you delete your account you disappear from others as well. sorry about that.
Facebook keeps your data however
