If you saw the Nigeria game, that was our weakness. All the goals looked the same. Seemingly defendable ball, then some uncertainty. At this level I’m any sport you’re gonna get picked off if you make a mistake.
Kerr’s face said it all ‘FFS. Now I kick another zinger’ and she almost did it.
This world cup fever had me thinking back to growing up and how difficult it was to watch a Matildas game and support the girls. One of my best memories was watching the Tillies play a double header with the Socceroos at North Sydney Oval, maybe 15/16 years ago.
I reckon less than 1000 people rocked up to the Tillies game. After the game I got a photo with my favourite player @bubs_11 beaming ear to ear, you couldnt wipe the smile off my face (unfortunately photo has been lost in the ether) and I spent the whole socceroos game bored shitless lol.
Having a few loose connections to some girls involved in the A League Women’s and the Matildas, the magnitude of this achievement can’t be understated.
There are girls playing W league that will earn half of what the AFLW minimum contract is despite playing a full home and away season next year. I myself feel sick to know I earned more in one year of AFLW than a 13 year W league veteran with national team experience.
In the NPL I know women’s teams are still being kicked off main pitches in favour of their male counterparts.
Let’s hope this buzz inspires the FA and the suits with the $$$ to put their money where their mouth is and give the girls an even better chance for the next World Cup.
Progress is always slow and there’s a long way to go, but it would be remiss not to reflect on how far we have come even in 8 years that have passed since this post.
I just bloody love this team 🫶🏼 @matildas thank you for this amazing experience, we’ll never forget it!
They have played Champions league finals on artificial turf and every new pitch built will be on artificial turf in many places. I don’t see that as a huge issue TBH
Well I got offered a ticket for tomorrow night. Never been to live soccer, nor Suncorp stadium, so may as well. Could well be more enjoyable than us v gws (which I suppose I will watch late after some drinks)
Just to pint out the further incompetence of the FFA they have announced the Round of 16 draw for the Australia Cup and have scheduled all 3 SA teams to be playing at the exact same time. There would be plenty of hardcore soccer fans here that would watch all 3 games and some would even support two of the sides playing and would considering attending multiple games or even travelling
