BBFFL#2 2016 Discussion

Binked Best 22, Trade & Draft review.

Trade period Ins: Max Gawn, Picks 54, 60, 69, 91
Outs: Ben Cunnington, Jonathon Ceglar, Ben Brown, Picks 42, 114, 123, 168

I wasn’t expecting to be particularly active during trade period unless I could secure a top 5 pick, however I did want to strengthen my ruck division so despite needing more quality C’s I was willing to lose Cunnington to give me a second strong ruck and hopefully guarantee a strong score in that position regardless of injury. Moving Brown on wasn’t something I was particularly looking to do, but when Silly Billy came knocking the trade was made to make my keeper selections a bit easier. He probably got the better of that deal, but it also allowed me to move on Ceglar who had got surprisingly little interest and get 8 picks in the top 100.

Draft:

Pick 6: Clayton Oliver (C - Melbourne)
Had really hoped Hopper would be overlooked and make it to my pick, but unfortunately not. Debated long and hard over Weitering, but ultimately decided I still needed more midfield depth. Kid has looked reasonably comfortable at AFL level so far throughout the NAB and should see plenty of game time at MFC.

Pick 24: Sam Butler (B - WCE)
Needed some depth in the backline and had a decent average and should hopefully be best 22 this season, back half of 2015 was good.

Pick 54: Mitch Honeychurch (CF - WB)
Have liked Honeychurch since his debut season although he’s struggled to stay in the Bulldogs 22. I’m still struggling to find 5 good forwards (as evidenced by Everitt making my keepers) and I’m hoping this is the year he can establish himself as a permanent part of the team.

Pick 60: Ed Langdon (CF - Fremantle)
Similar to Honeychurch I’m hoping Langdon can start to establish himself in Freo’s 22 this year. Has a very strong record at WAFL level and looked like he could handle the pace of AFL in his 2 games in 2015. There’s going to start to be a little bit of regeneration around Freo’s team this year I suspect and hoping that means opportunities for him.

Pick 69: Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (BF - Essendon)
Probably early here for Walla but I had my heart set on him since he was drafted to the club in the rookie draft and given the situation at the club this year I think he’ll get plenty of game time. Plus I was sick of people taking the players I had my heart set on in the few picks before mine :P. Probably won’t score too highly, but I kind of don’t care :P. Chance to make my keepers if he can average around 60 with Smith possibly going to lose his back eligibility next season if he moves into the midfield as expected at the Crows.

Pick 78: Ryan Clarke (C - NM)
I had sworn I wasn’t going to load up with young mids, but try to pick a few best 22 even if they were lower scorers. However, I didn’t really like the options left on the table by this point and this kid was good value at the pick. Club rates him having already extended his contract.

Pick 91: Andrew Phillips (RF - Carlton)
I rate Phillips and tried pretty hard to fit him into my keepers, so was happy to pick him up as my 3rd ruck. Forward eligibility is handy if he should show some form throughout the year. Probably could’ve held off a bit on picking him, but Melk showed some interest in him during trade period so was conscious of taking him either with this pick or 96 before Melk was back in the draft.

Pick 96: Ethan Hughes (B - Fremantle)
Needed another back and didn’t like the dregs on offer, so went with youth again. Looked good in his debut last year and earnt a promotion to the senior list for his troubles. Probably won’t play much early, but I think he’ll see senior action again this year.

Pick 130: Billy Evans (CF - BL)
Another re-draft for me. I like the look of this kid and the Lions rate him. Might not get games early, but will get games throughout the year and can hopefully step up.

Pick 147: Dean Gore (C - Adelaide)
Probably not going to do much this year, but it’s late in the draft and it was either bank someone for a development year or select an low-scoring regular 22 player.

Overall the draft is more speculative than I had planned, but unfortunately whilst my backline is reasonably strong, my midfield still needs a couple more gems and the forward line is still extremely weak.

Best 22:

B: Tom McDonald (B), Tommy Sheridan (B), Chris Yarran (B), Tomas Bugg (B), Brodie Smith (BC)
C: Adam Treloar ©, Luke Shuey ©, Tom Liberatore ©, Josh Caddy ©, Jack Crisp ©, Dom Sheed (CF), Mark Hutchings (CF)
F: Josh Green (F), Kyle Langford (F), Dean Towers (F), Jackson Merrett (F), Andrejs Everitt (F)
R: Max Gawn

Int: Ben McEvoy ®, Ed Langdon (CF), Clayton Oliver ©, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (FB)

Season expectations:

I honestly don’t know what to expect from my own team from year to year, but I think my list is better than the last season showed. Liberatore back will help although is balanced somewhat by trading out Cunnington. Crisp losing forward eligibility is mitigated by Sheed and Hutchings both gaining it, unfortunately though I am unlikely to have the midfield depth to push either of them forward.

If any of my speculative CF picks come on as hoped (or Oliver scores well enough to make my starting 18), that could all rapidly change. Overall goal is to make the bottom half of the 8 and I think the top half of my list is strong enough to achieve that. As always, it’s the bottom half that will really determine where I end up.

If that trade was
In: Gawn
Out: Ben Cunnington, Jonathon Ceglar, Ben Brown, Picks 42, 114, 123, 168

I’d still have thought you won it.

Great write up, Birchy.

I think you had an excellent draft. Your best 22 is very strong in terms of will-play on every line. I really like the look of it, Oliver is a ripper plus Clarke as a future talent.

Good work.

lol thanks Barge :).

yeah my 22 is pretty solid across the board in terms of not getting too many donuts. It’s taken a few years but a lot of the talent I’ve picked up is starting to mature and become consistent.

JOBIE WAN KENOBI ALMOST-POST-DRAFT WRAP UP

I think I am going to finally win it this year… and I am going to do it with Lumumba and Dawson on my list to make it sting the comp even more!

First Round: Shaun Atley (B)

Norf best 22. Missed only a handful of games in five seasons. Being groomed to be more of rebounding defender role according to him and Norf, which will hopefully translate into scored in the 70+ region this year.

Second Round: Ben Jacobs (BC)

Same deal as Atley, except has BC status. I needed defenders so Jacobs and Atley are two young rebounding defenders in a good team and are best 22 every week. Reliable.

Third Round: James Frawley (B)

Need backup in defense so again strengthened that area with best 22 player in Frawley. With Lake’s retirement should take on more responsibility. Average is misleading and had seven 70+ scores last season from 17 games. Solid bench option.

Fourth Round: Heritier Lumumba (B)

Wanker. Hate myself for picking him.

Fifth Round: Mark Jamar ®

Needed ruck backup as Longer is my only option at this point. Probably left this need way too late, but Jamar should get some quality game time as Looneyburger is chronically broken it seems. Bench.

Sixth Round: Tom Boyd (F)

Surprised he was still there. Had great preseason and is showing why he was pick one a couple years back. Will sit on my bench at best for the foreseeable future, but could be a surprise packet and force his way in that last F slot.

Seventh Round: Jackson Trengove (B)

■■■■ scorer, but best 22 player for Port and with sub being taken out expect him to take load off Lobbe more and regain the BR status soon. That’s pretty much the only reason I got him.

Eighth Round: Jake Neade (F)

Had a ripping preseason according to Wingard and hopeful he will cement himself as a Port Best 22 player this year. Bench depth at best for this year though for my team.

Ninth Round: Jarrad Grant (FC)

Rocket was main reason why GC signed him. Played 15+ games for WB last year and finding a niche role as a tall wingman. Will be interesting to see how he goes. No expectations from me though. Bench at best.

Tenth Round: Zac Dawson (B) - TBC
I want to give him the premiership he will never attain in real life, even if it is a ‘Leon Davis’ premiership…

Best 18 (plus 4 bench)

Backs:

Robert Murphy (80) - B

Clancee Pearce (78) - BC

Jack Grimes (78) - B

Ricky Henderson (74) - BC

Shaun Atley (62) - B

Mids:

Tom Rockliff (105) - C Best DT scorer in AFL. Last year was injury-riddled. 2014 was 134.7 ave.

Hamish Hartlett (96) - C

Stephen Hill (92) - C

Stephen Coniglio (90) - C

Jack Newnes (85) - C
Expecting 90+ this year

Ryan Bastinac (65) - C
Hoping new environment at BL can reinvigorate his career. Capable of 80+

Craig Bird (65) - FC
Was best 22 at Sydney. 2014 showed he is 80+ mid.

Forwards:

Dustin Martin (104) - FC

Luke Dahlhaus (98) - FC

Ben McGlynn (85) - F
Same deal as Rockliff. 2015 was injury-riddled. Was best DT Forward in 2014 with 104 ave

Chris Mayne (80) - F

Jeremy Cameron (70) - F
Hoping for breakout year DT score-wise

Ruck:

Billy Longer (67) - R
Is now No.1 ruck at Saints. Hoping for 75+ minimum.

Bench:

Matthew Wright (56) - FC
Expecting to see 70+ and pushing for Best 18

Ben Jacobs (68) - BC

Mark Jamar (67) - R or Jackson Trengove (47) - B

Tom Boyd (51) - F

Leftovers:

Sam Reid (69) - F
Jarryd Blair (68) - F
Heritier Lumumba (57) - B
Jarrad Grant (59) - FC
Jake Neade (56) - F
James Frawley (65) - B

That’s a strong list No.5. Good depth too, you should have a good run at it. Only 2 rucks on your list though, hopefully no injuries or you could be exposed pretty easily.

Ultimate Footy re-evaluate positions every three rounds, so I'm pretty confident that Jackson Trengove will regain ruck status as a BR pretty soon. That is the only reason I got him to be honest. There are a few more ruck options on the board for my last pick which I may consider, but don't think I will at this stage. Will let the season start and maybe try and snag one from waivers.

Can’t believe I couldn’t get a top 10 pick for Joe Daniher!

Be very very thankful

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti very impressive so far

Cafegerat is up if anyone wants to message him. Now I’ve gotta wait for 25 picks and WOBfest to finish things off with a potential future brownlow winner at pick 185

No 5 is online, I’m not really sure why he’s taking so long to type Z-a-c D-a-w-s-o-n. Anyway, I’m ready to go when he goes, so stay tuned Melky.

I'm on tenterhooks mate.

I took a boring risk in Jason Holmes, as opposed to the potential exciting risk player I was thinking of taking with my last pick (not Zac Dawson!).

Logic here is that I need ruck depth, and if Billy Longer doesn’t play because of injury, Saints will play Holmes to complement Hickey. That’s literally the only reason I picked him - so I can lessen the blow of not having an established ruckman by some 25-odd points at best.

Believe me when I say I wanted to take Zac Dawson just for a laugh. I really did want to pick him!
