Four of those 5 points are to do with selection issues.
So @westozziebomber it’s hard to be triggered by things that aren’t what I’ve been talking about.
Especially when I was one of the first to query Kelly’s effect on our backline.
The massive difference was that they are going up the ground against the HF opponents and staying on the defensive side of them whilst they (the HF opponents) get sucked deeper into our F50. that’s exactly how you should defend.
Before, our HB line was pressing up the ground - Redman would often charge up the ground - on their own whilst their HF opponents stayed inside their own half of the ground. Go and re-watch our games earlier this, the Carlton game (early Q1 and early Q3) and Q2 of the the Eagles game.
Team selection is a key part of of game plan.
You pick the players who you think best able to play the game plan you want.
That’s great, but we are still allowing opposition teams to go from end to end with very little pressure on the ball carrier. The only real change I have seen is the man on man at kick outs, something other teams have been doing for years now!
I think sub ideally you have a contested running player with pace.
Club obviously think Menzie is not quite ready, or worried about debuting as a sub.
I probably would have preferred Lord tried as a sub over Ham as we already know what he can do and he is likely in the gun to be delisted.
we’ve been playing a completely different style since the st kilda game
I think I’ve worked out what is going on with our game plan, hear me out.
Anything that contributes to us winning is a departure from Rutten’s game plan.
Anything that contributes to us losing is a stubborn refusal to depart from Rutten’s game plan.
It’s a very attractive position to argue from actually.
So when players like Langford Jones, Snelling Massimo, & a Zerk, who’s clearly been practising the “zone defence” game plan in the Twos, come in -
Is it a different game plan?
Or is it the same game plan, but better executed?
And never did I say we were executing the game plan well. Whatever people may think it was or wasn’t.
like jono said. their has been a definite shift to more of a tighter man on man focus. no, this doesnt mean they follow them everywhere. add to this, positional changes and roles
its so obvious. watch the replay of the Sydney game. we haven’t got better at implementing the same trash rutten has been working on all year, he threw it out, most likely because he knew he’d lose his job if we kept on getting belted
Different game plan…to add what I already posted we are going more 1:1 than just purely zoning all the time (especially when the opposition kicks out from a behind).
nice try Clako
I could refer you back to my detailed posts about how a zone defence does not preclude manning up on players but hey, it’s already been said.
Win - we changed the game plan, which is bad - sack Rutten
Lose - it’s a bad game plan - sack Rutten
Yeh spot on we’ve been playing mostly a winning game style.
We won against Adelaide and we were shocking that day leaking goal after goal over the top to Adelaide players running on their own inside their own F50.
If you can’t see that a depleted Brisbane Lions outfit just waltzed the ball end to end and kicked 90 points against our game plan but were depleted enough to allow us to do the same a little better and see that as a good coaching effort then you are lost…
the phrase “man on man” doesnt mean they exclusively follow the same opponent everywhere. handovers happen all the time, constantly.
We didn’t change the game plan against the Lions, it was the same ■■■■ gameplan, they just weren’t good enough to capitalise on it!
Yeah it was all a little too easy for the Bears yesterday. A side with that many outs at late notice should be totally under prepared to counter the opposition.
If we have made progress as a win over St Kilda, Sydney and Lions would suggest then we should win all of our remaining games with Richmond being the true test.
Pretty much.
I remember early 2020 when people were very keen on the high frontal pressure being clearly all Rutten’s doing, before nasty old J Worsfold threw it all out around round 9 (?) leading to the big streak of losses.
People see what they want to see…
The club dosent learn do they if they extended Ruttens contract
Only way he gets a contract extension if he has us sitting comfortably in the 8 and winning us a final next year
