Ben Rutten - Back to the grindstone (Part 2)

You mean regular percentage (I.e points scored / points conceded)?

yeah, in season. so like what was our % at the end of last season, what was it rd 1 this year etc…

% is a great measure of how competitive you are generally.

Yep can do that

my guess is our % has never got much better than 110, 115 maybe and we’re just about at our lowest point now.

Whatever our game plan was in 2021, let’s go back to that and start again from there…

Tweak it in the upcoming preseason if needed but stop over-complicating.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the dees partly credit their turn around to simplifying their game plan.

Jeez what a bad preseason! Biggest rise season by season by an absolute mile

The biggest thing that is gone is hope! There used to be three types of games-ones you expected to win (lower teams or interstate teams at Marvel), 50-50 games( teams around us on the ladder or higher ranked interstate teams at Marvel) or games you thought we would lose (any interstate game or games against top sides). I have no expectation or hope at all thanks to Rutten.

Great request Ivan and wow… that does not make pretty reading

Right
So the players not adhering too, being able to follow and implement the coaching panels game plan is all on the players*
Sack the coaches (like we have done in the past) keep the players, go fisty cuffs and everything will change?

Edit: should have said all on the coaches.

I wonder if Rutten is aware of these stats - please send to the club for perusal.

I look at these results as another indictment on Xavier. We should have never have changed plans in the 2019 offseason.

The results show that our defence was working well in 2018. There was a good balance between offence and defence, shown by our percentage.

I know people seem to think Worsfold couldn’t coach, but these results completely contradict that

fascinating, we really bucked the trend last year it looks like.

this is a rolling average of the % for each individual game right?

can you show what the cumulative % for what each round is though i.e. what we see/saw on the ladder after each round.

No but let’s have some connection, communication and set expectations that the players are accountable for and can follow. If the game plan, style isn’t being implemented it can only be: they don’t understand it, they don’t see or value the benefits of it or they are lazy. What is it? Rutten can influence any one of the three variables either indirectly or directly through his coaching.

What I would do for a coach that didn’t have the team playing such namby-pamby football. I never thought I’d see this. I don’t care if they lose any more, I just want to see them be competitive.

100% agree. Clarke is leading the SANFL in tackles and would not surprise me if he gets another shot via the mid season draft. Another masterpiece of list management by us.

Supposedly what happened there is when Neeld got the chop the line coaches were able to take more responsibly and coach the way they wanted to not how Neeld wanted them to

Wasn’t just the players that got more freedom.

Then once again for some reason it was decided we needed to tighten defence up and Rutten was brought on board (by Richardson) to oversee full ground defence. Which then ended up causing player discontent (why change what was working) and friction amongst the coaches again.

Skipworth got the boot end of 2019 IIRC

14 tackles vs Norwood

A tall forward would be a better option-I loved his effort but very similar to our other mids. He lacked pace and kicking was not the best. He tried hard though.
