Ben Rutten - sacked

Yep

The Carey effect.

Doesn’t matter what level of trash, misogynistic piece of ■■■■ you are, you kicked a football good once so here, have a job.

I wish Kelli Underwood wasn’t completely bullshit, there needs to be more pressure on the spouse-abusers club that is AFL media.

Why should we listen to a word Joey Montagna says?

I don’t think he could define ‘consent.’

you dont even know what the word means

An Adelaide style camp is exactly what Essendon players deserve.

Just on the players.

We could well have seen the last of the players directly affected by the saga. It would be naive to think that wouldn’t have had an impact on their attitudes. They were victims of a crime they didn’t commit and I don’t really blame them.

What worries me is there seems to be a sense of entitlement that has leaked in to the younger blokes on the list as well. Maybe this has been unconsciously handed down through locker room banter or off hand comments… I don’t know, wasn’t there etc.

But it’s there. And they need to shut their ■■■■■■■ mouths and perform now.

Board, coach, structure: yes, all have problems. But the playing group are the only ones who have a 1:1 relationship with on-field output.

There’s been zero excuse for a lot of their performances in recent years. You don’t lose to ■■■■■■■ Port Adelaide at home by 84 points because Brasher loves Xavier.

I’m all for a cleanout at ALL levels of the club, players included.

Why would you say that you want an experienced coach? It is not like Woosha worked.

Knights was such a stupid appointment, when he was a VFL coach and was never part of the AFL set up. Then Hird was equally dumb decision because he wasn’t part of football at any level since his retirement for ages.

Then after that, Rutten was such a stupid appointment as he wasn’t the best man in the market. They randomly did a stupid succession appointment when his gamplan was not even working.

So why would you draw a line through candidates who are extremely talented who are waiting for an opportunity.

We never had a proper process to appoint a coach in 40 years. Even when Bomber got it for that one year, Terry Wallace said that they were concerned with Bomber and the best candidate they recommended was not appointed by the board. They just ran a process to make it look like genuine appointment but they just put Bomber in charge so it pleases the masses. Embarrassing board.

How did that not become a thing?

As I recall she resigned, maybe there is a story behind it though.

Perhaps she did.
Perhaps there isn’t.
Can’t be an easy gig.

It was, as they say, a gq.

Send that to the media… hard to debate with facts. That makes for some ugly reading.

I would only argue that 2021 has been ‘overhyped’ when you actually look back at it (and I am guilty of it too)… it could easily read for 2021:
Slow start with a couple of close losses but bottom four looked likely after round 6. The game plan is confusing and even though Parish has to move to middle due to injury and starts to rip out one of the greatest individual seasons of football in recent memory… combining the gun of Merrett to create 2 of the top 3 midfielders in the comp sharing a centre circle - the team still struggles to find any consistency. By the bye, we sit outside the 8 and another bottom 4 finish looms. The players demand the game plan be thrown out and it is. Stringer then goes purple playing for his last big career contract extension. Team still can’t beat any sides of consequence and despite having four really good chances to secure a finals berth still fluffs all of them. In the end, they bradbury enough wins against the lowest teams due to our easy draw on the back of 2020 is enough to sneak into the 8 with only 11 wins and %. We get thumped and thumped hard by the doggies and the gap between us and the top teams is as wide as ever.

Interested to get the views on those far more knowledgeable on structures and game plans.

But I can recall the club saying they’ve had to tweak things around because the run and gun football through the middle etc was not sustainable and would not hold up in finals footy.

What’s the difference between the current Pies game plan? They’ve got a cohesive defence but they also run the ball and prefer to take it down the middle.

Did we really need to change our plan? Couldn’t we have just focused on tightening up our backline? But still allowing for the run and gun style that worked well for us?

Wellman beat Paul Cousins at the same election when Katie got re-elected.

The defenders stay in the defensive zone and mids actually run hard back to defence when they turn it over, our whole team runs forward with the ball and watches our opponents run the other way when we lose it.

Matthews to Brisbane (2001, 2002, 2003), Malthouse (2010) to Collingwood, Blight to Adelaide (1997, 1998) etc that worked, when hiring experienced coaches.

After 2010, it has all been won by first time coaches who have been hired by that club.

2011 - Scott
2012 - Longmire
2013 - Clarkson
2014 - Clarkson
2015 - Clarkson
2016 - Bevridge
2017 - Hardwick
2018 - Simpson
2019 - Hardwick
2020 - Hardwick
2021 - Goodwin

We need to go and find the best coach and then we need to stick with them. Because we haven’t had succes for so long, we are looking for instant results. Having said that, we haven’t followed the process in hiring a coach in the first place.
